Coccaglio between history, wine and Monte Orfano
Coccaglio combines a historic town center with trails on Monte Orfano, cultural sights and regional wine. The focus is on medieval fortification remains and churches; Monte Orfano additionally offers trails, a geological park and wine tastings. The Trenord railway line makes Coccaglio accessible from Brescia or Bergamo.
Churches and historical traces
The Chiesa di San Pietro features simple Romanesque-style architecture. Inside, frescoes from the end of the 15th century and from the 16th century are still visible today.
Another church is the Pieve di S. Giovanni Battista. It is located within the walls of Coccaglio’s medieval castrum. Access is possible after contacting the parish priest.
The Parrocchia S. Maria Nascente was built in the first decades of the 18th century to a design by the architect Antonio Corbellini. Thus, a building from the early modern period complements the older traces in the town center.
Museum and events
The Museo d’Arte Orientale – Collezione Mazzocchi houses a collection of Japanese artifacts from the 16th to the 18th century. The museum is divided into four thematic areas. By prior arrangement, it can organize guided tours and private visits, workshops and educational programs.
The Auditorium S. Giovanni Battista hosts performances, exhibitions, public meetings and film screenings. The venue adds a changing program of different formats to the cultural sights.
Trails and nature on Monte Orfano
Guided tours of the Parco Geologico del Montorfano can be arranged with the Gruppo Speleo. The Sentiero delle Croci leads to the summit and the Croce di Coccaglio.
The Sentiero via Piè di Monte is one of the more demanding hiking trails on Monte Orfano. Its difficulty rating is just as relevant when planning a hike as the specific destination of the Sentiero delle Croci.
Parco Belvedere is located along the cycle path connecting Coccaglio and Cologne. The park is therefore part of a section between the two towns specifically accessible by bicycle.
Parco San Pietro lies at the foot of Monte Orfano and features a green area with slides, swings and exercise play equipment. In addition to the mountain trails, the municipality therefore also offers an outdoor area with a different design.
Wine and regional atmosphere
In Montorfano Coccaglio, Pianora Azienda Agricola offers visits and wine tastings by prior arrangement. The visit combines the local connection to wine with a specific agricultural setting.
Historic town center
From the 1st-century BC Roman castrum and the medieval castle of Coccaglio, the base of the main tower remains. Parts of the medieval defensive wall and drawbridge have also been preserved in the historic center. Roman and medieval structural remains thus stand side by side in the same townscape.
