Siviano between net-making tradition and terraced slopes

Siviano combines the history of the island’s nets with a distinctive townscape and trails through a terraced landscape. The village stretches along a northeast-facing slope between vineyards and olive trees. In the historic center, a long, largely straight main street shapes the townscape; the oldest houses stand along it. This makes it a destination where you can explore local history, the harbor and hiking trails in different ways.

Between terraced slopes and the historic center

The location between vineyards and olive trees gives Siviano a distinct landscape character. At the same time, the historic center preserves its structure along the main street. Anyone walking through this part of Siviano encounters not only individual buildings but also a continuous streetscape containing the oldest houses in the village. The straight course of the street provides clear orientation within the historic center.

Nets, harbor and island history

At the harbor of Siviano, the Museo della Rete is housed in the La Rete Srl net factory, the oldest factory still in operation on Monte Isola. The museum also includes a typical fishing boat of the naèt type. The traditional trail also follows the history of net making: it includes a stop in Siviano with an information panel recounting a legend about the island’s nets. The trail then continues to the Porto di Siviano. This is where the island’s largest net factory and one of the few remaining net factories on the island are located.

Church and Martinengo Tower

Among the defining buildings is the parish church of Chiesa dei Santi Faustino e Giovita. It was built in the 16th century and rebuilt on the same site between 1735 and 1754. The medieval Martinengo Tower dominates Siviano. Together, the two buildings make the town’s history immediately visible in today’s townscape.

Siviano’s small harbor can be reached within a few minutes via a path branching off from the village.

Via Cure to the Santuario della Ceriola

From Cure, a partly steep ascent leads to the Santuario della Ceriola in 20 minutes. The hiking route from Siviano via Cure to the Santuario della Ceriola passes beneath the parish church of Chiesa dei Santi Faustino e Giovita.

Andiamo in rete: museum and craftsmanship

The historic center, the parish church and the Museo della Rete represent different ways of approaching the history of Monte Isola. The harbor path, the traditional trail and the route via Cure complement these cultural themes with walking and movement. During the “Andiamo in rete” experience, you first visit a museum dedicated to the history of the area’s nets and interlacing; afterwards, you make an item from cord and netting.
