Manerbio as a historically shaped town

Manerbio combines architectural history, religious art, a well-preserved square and a landscape that helps shape the character of the Bassa Bresciana. This creates a destination where the town’s history becomes visible in specific buildings, squares and cultural institutions. The different periods of origin range from the 11th century to the post-medieval period, giving the town remarkable historical depth.

Palazzo Luzzago and the Museo Civico

The Museo Civico di Manerbio is housed in the wing of the 17th-century Palazzo Luzzago. The exhibition covers the development of human settlement in the Bassa Bresciana from the Neolithic period to the post-medieval period. For travelers interested in culture, this provides a broad time frame that connects Manerbio with the long settlement history of its region.

Palazzo Luzzago Di Bagno was created in the 18th century by merging two neighboring buildings from the early 17th century. On the south side of Palazzo Luzzago, the former riding hall was converted into the Teatro Civico. The Castelletto is also known as Palazzo Peschiera and is a building from the late 16th century in Manerbio. The two older buildings and the converted riding hall represent different historical phases in Manerbio’s architectural development.

Churches, art and religious history

The Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Lorenzo was built in the first half of the 18th century. The church contains a painting by Moretto, that is, Alessandro Bonvicini, from the 16th century. It depicts San Lorenzo and other saints.

Other churches add to this cultural focus. The Oratorio di San Faustino in Manerbio was built in the 11th century. The Chiesa di San Rocco was built at the beginning of the 16th century. The Chiesa della Disciplina was built as a votive offering by the population to pray for the end of an epidemic. The Chiesa del Santo Spirito is located within the monastery.

Piazza Italia and the Mella River

Piazza Italia preserves Manerbio’s historic character through the intact façades of the buildings surrounding it. The Mella River provides a different, landscape-based accent: it crosses the entire municipal area and is one of the most important elements of the Bassa’s environmental and landscape system. Its course through the entire municipal area makes the Mella a linear landscape feature of the Bassa Bresciana and thus shapes the townscape.
