Mura Between Church History and Mountain Trails
Mura combines remarkable religious buildings with trails leading into a distinctive mountain landscape. The Chiese di Mura tell the story of several centuries of architectural and religious history, while Rifugio Nasego, Bivacco Comune di Mura and Corna di Savallo draw attention to the area's trails and heights. This picture is complemented by the artificial Lago di Bongi and the regional cuisine of Valle Sabbia.
Sacred Art and History in Mura
The Chiesa di s. Domenico is already mentioned in the records of Bishop Bollani's episcopal visitation of 1566. Its single-nave layout gives the building a clear, concentrated spatial form. The only altar was added during renovations in the first half of the 17th century. The vault frescoes date from the first half of the 18th century and depict episodes from the life of Saint Dominic.
The Chiesa della Santissima Trinità (Mura) is located in the hamlet of Veriano. It was built at the end of the 16th century and has a single-nave interior with a barrel vault.
The history of Mura is closely connected with the Pieve di Mura. The building of the Pieve remained intact until the 14th century. For centuries, it formed the religious, social and economic centre of the extensive area of Summa Vallis, also known as the Savallese.
Lago di Bongi and the Landscape of Savallo
Lago di Bongi is an artificial lake within the municipality of Mura. After the artificial lake of Bongi, the signposts on the main road lead to the Ippovia del Savallese. This main road connects Mura with the Pertiche.
At 1,390 metres, Corna di Savallo is the highest point in the Mura area.
Trails to Rifugio and Bivacco
Rifugio Nasego can be reached via a route from Mura. During the week, it serves as a bivouac available to hikers; on Sundays and public holidays, it is managed by the volunteer group “Amici della Montagna” and offers food and refreshments. A route beginning in Mura also leads to Bivacco Comune di Mura at an elevation of 1,280 metres.
Access and Regional Trail Connections
Mura can be reached via the SP3 provincial road, both from Nozza di Vestone and from Valle Trompia. Via Lago Bongi also leads from Pertica Alta to Mura.
