Roina: Church, Alley and Paths Along the Stream
Roina combines a small church, a stone-lined alleyway and paths for trekking and cycling. A fountain on Via Roina and a small waterfall along one of the routes add to these local features. Exploration thus leads from San Giorgio and the town's historical traces to routes and a stream.
San Giorgio and the Church Square
Chiesa di San Giorgio is located in Roina. Chiesa di San Giorgio means Church of Saint George in German; San Giorgio is the Italian name of the saint. It stands elevated above the adjacent road, with a church square in front of the building. The small church, dedicated to Saint George, has a history dating back as far as 1326. Its elevated position above the road and the church square in front shape the spatial relationship of the small building. San Giorgio therefore represents a distinct focus within a visit to the town for visitors interested in cultural history.
Stone Houses, Arches and Fountain
An old alley in Roina runs between stone houses and passes beneath two stone arches. The route through the alley is characterized by the changing sequence of façades and stone passageways. A drinking-water fountain is located in a small square on Via Roina. Those exploring Roina on foot can connect the local architecture with a specific square here.
Routes for Trekking and Cycling
Route 104 of the Riviera dei Limoni Bike Experience passes through Roina. The Toscolano-Maderno trekking route also runs through the town. The Garda Single Track cycling route likewise passes through Roina. For planning a day, the choice of route can be organized by means of transport: Route 104 and Garda Single Track pass through Roina by bicycle, while Toscolano-Maderno passes through the town as a trekking route. In addition, one route passes through Roina and then reaches the small church of San Giorgio. During preparation, you can therefore choose between the two cycling routes, the Toscolano-Maderno trekking route and the route to the church.
The Waterfall Along the Way
Along the route in Roina, a small stream forms a small waterfall. This landscape feature is therefore located along the course of a route rather than separate from it. Anyone wishing to take the stream into account when planning their route can mark the waterfall as a specific point along the way.
Historical Traces from Roina to Gargnano
A grave stele for Lorenia Mercatilla is also part of Roina's history. The ancient Strada Regia led from Toscolano to Gargnano before the Gardesana Occidentale was built. Alongside San Giorgio, Lorenia Mercatilla brings a specific person from the town's history into focus.
