Verolanuova among Squares and History

The central squares of Verolanuova form a pleasant circular route around the town’s historic centre. This creates a manageable setting in which to combine architecture, religious buildings and green areas. The various stops tell of medieval periods of rule, Baroque changes and the town’s cultural character.

Architecture and Historical Traces

Il Nuovo Campanile was inaugurated on 26 March 1911. The tower is approximately 60 metres high and has nine bells. Its clear defining features make it a particularly distinctive building within the historic townscape, without requiring you to choose from a large number of individual attractions.

Castel Merlino dates back to the late 12th century. At the beginning of the feudal rule of the Counts of Gambara, it was their first residence. A deep moat, sloping masonry and a moulded brick string course characterise the complex. Anyone interested in regional history and medieval architecture will find several historical features here that can be directly observed in the building itself.

The churches of Verolanuova also lead through different periods. The Chiesa di San Rocco was built in the 15th century and remodelled in the Baroque style at the beginning of the 18th century. The Chiesa di Sant'Anna has an altar dedicated to Blessed Paola Gambara Costa. The same church also houses a painting by Santo Cattaneo.

Palazzo Maggi is a significant architectural complex in Cadignano. The building contains frescoes by Lattanzio Gambara, created around 1560. One of Palazzo Maggi’s towers has an arcaded passageway offering views of the countryside and the wooded area along the Strone.

The Chiesa di San Donnino is said to have already existed beside the Benedictine convent of S. Donnino in 1194; the convent was under the authority of the Badia di Leno.

Park, River and Circular Routes

The trees and flower beds of Parco Nocivelli, including rose plantings, frame the historic centre of Verolanuova. Among the stone and religious buildings, the park creates its own connection with the landscape. If, when visiting the town, you would like to take in not only buildings but also planted open spaces, this contrast is part of the centre’s distinctive structure.

A footbridge over the Strone River connects Via San Rocco with Parco Comunale «Angelo e Lina Nocivelli».

Getting There and Choosing Where to Stay

Daily scheduled buses connect Verolanuova with Brescia and the surrounding municipalities. Verolanuova is also located on the Brescia–Cremona railway line and has its own railway station, Stazione di Verolanuova. You can take both connections into account when planning your days and choosing a hotel, along with your personal priorities among churches, historic buildings, squares and parks.
