Nigoline Bonomelli brings together historic palazzi, church art and routes through the town. In Nigoline di Corte Franca, the palazzo consists of various buildings enclosed by a surrounding wall, forming a kind of small village. Palazzo Franceschetti includes painted rooms, terracotta floors and wooden ceilings; the estate also includes a large park with several centuries-old trees. The complex thus appears as a group of different buildings within a shared enclosure, complemented by interior spaces and a stand of old trees.
Chiesa di Sant’Eufemia: Location and Cycle of Paintings
The Chiesa di Sant’Eufemia was founded in the 8th or 9th century as a small single-nave oratory. It stands on elevated ground on a hill in the morainic amphitheatre of Lake Iseo. In the early years of the 16th century, the presbytery was decorated with a cycle of paintings depicting, in individual scenes, the martyrdom of Saint Euphemia and the Passion of Jesus. Several centuries lie between its foundation in the 8th or 9th century and its decoration in the early 16th century. The elevated location and the scenes in the presbytery thus connect the landscape of Lake Iseo with sacred art.
Palazzo Torri and Palazzo Monti della Corte
Palazzo Torri was first built in the mid-17th century and is associated with the Federici della Corte family. Paolina Calegari developed it into a cultural salon; the figures it hosted include Giuseppe Zanardelli, Giosuè Carducci and Antonio Fogazzaro. For those interested in culture, the palazzo’s architectural history and its connection with cultural life take centre stage here.
In the historic centre of Nigoline lies Palazzo Monti della Corte, a 17th-century residence. The building features an elegant atrium with a portico, large vaults and three bright arcades, supported by columns with Tuscan capitals. These open onto an extensive landscaped garden. The columns, vaults and arcades define the progression from the atrium to the landscaped garden. Palazzo Monti della Corte can be visited for events and on the occasion of special openings by the Associazione Dimore Storiche Italiane.
Historic Routes through Nigoline
The third stage of the 130-kilometre Via delle Sorelle hiking trail passes through Nigoline. Contrada del Torrazzo is an old medieval historic centre and leads to the ascent of Monte Alto. A tour of Nigoline’s historic centre also includes the birthplace of Monsignor Geremia Bonomelli. When planning the stages, it is therefore important to distinguish between the total length of the route and the specific section through Nigoline. The route described leads from the historic centre to an ascent and also includes a biographical site.
