Albiolo Between Art History and Community Life

Albiolo combines historic sacred architecture, distinctive local festivals and a protected natural area. In the town centre is Castello Odescalchi, a villa dating from the 17th to the 18th century. The building is privately owned and is therefore one of the historic landmarks that shape the townscape.

The Oratorio di San Martino is considered a rare example of minor Romanesque art. Its construction is dated to the late 12th to early 13th century. The Oratorio features fresco cycles from the 15th century on both its interior and exterior walls.

The Oratorio di San Martino is currently used as a church dedicated to Saint Anne and is a Marian shrine. Those interested in religious art, medieval architectural history and the continued use of historic sacred buildings will find a distinctive cultural feature in Albiolo.

Festivals with Lombard Flavour

In July, the Oratorio di San Martino is a particularly important pilgrimage destination on the occasion of the Festa di Sant’Anna. The festival takes place at the same time as a Sagra that has existed for around a hundred years. The Festa di Sant’Anna also features a large amusement park and a widely acclaimed firework display on the Saturday evening of the last week of July.

Another fixture in the events calendar is the Fiera di San Martino, an agricultural and food fair promoting cattle breeding. It normally takes place in the second week of November. It includes livestock exhibitions as well as exhibitions of machinery and products for agriculture and animal husbandry. The fair is therefore aimed not only at lovers of regional cuisine, but also at visitors who want to learn about the town’s agricultural background.

Lombard dishes are served at the Fiera di San Martino. They are accompanied by the traditional Albiolo sweet dish “buscella” and the meat-based sweet dish “spada di San Martino”, created especially for the event. This unusual combination of fair, regional products and local specialities gives the November event a distinctive culinary profile.

Wetlands and Panoramic Views

Albiolo is part of the Parco Sorgenti del Torrente Lura, a local park of supra-municipal interest. The park comprises eight municipalities in the Province of Como and aims to protect and enhance the natural area. Albiolo’s wetland system is one of the particularly important wetlands in the Parco Sorgenti del Torrente Lura.
