Garzeno – Historic Village Center, Hiking Trails and Local Flavors

Garzeno combines a distinctive historic village center with trails through forests and pastures. The trails also shape the character of the village: from Garzeno, routes lead into forests and pastures, to Rifugio Giovo, Brenzeglio and Peglio. Local features include rustic houses, alpine Masun and the sweet Braschino focaccia associated with Garzeno.

Historic Village Center and Distinctive Architectural Forms

Several rustic houses stand in Garzeno’s historic village center. Some of them feature votive frescoes. These frescoes are attributed only to some of the houses, not to the historic village center as a whole.

The local landscape also includes numerous Masun. These are alpine mountain huts with rye-straw roofs. The numerous Masun are located within Garzeno’s territory, while the rustic houses belong to the historic village center. The rye-straw roofs shape the external form of these alpine mountain huts and give them a distinctive appearance within Garzeno’s territory.

The parish church of Saints Peter and Paul in Garzeno was built in the 15th century. In the hamlet of Catasco, a small church built more recently stands in place of the former Oratorio di S. Bernardino. The parish church therefore dates from the 15th century, while Catasco is associated with a more recent church. The term “former” refers to the Oratorio di S. Bernardino, not to the small church.

Mule Tracks, Forests and Pastures

The old village center can be reached via a narrow, steep, paved mule track.

A mule track ascending along the left-hand slope leads from Garzeno to Rifugio Giovo at an elevation of 1,706 meters. The elevation of 1,706 meters refers to Rifugio Giovo. In addition, numerous hiking trails lead from Garzeno to Brenzeglio. The route to Rifugio Giovo and the stage to Peglio share the climb, but lead to different destinations in the area around Garzeno.

Garzeno’s forests and pastures offer impressive views in many areas. As a result, the landscape experience is not limited to a single viewpoint but is spread across many parts of Garzeno.

Stage 06 to Peglio

Stage 06 between Garzeno and Peglio runs along forest paths and paved mule tracks. From Garzeno to Peglio, after the ascent above the huts, the stage follows a path to the Church of Sant’Anna. When planning the day for this section, the change in trail surfaces and the ascent before the path to the church should therefore be taken into account together.

Local Flavor: Braschino

A culinary specialty associated with Garzeno is Braschino. The sweet focaccia is prepared with walnuts, raisins or sultanas, as well as sugar mixed with egg white. Raisins and sultanas are alternatives in the recipe. Braschino combines focaccia with nuts, dried fruit and a sweet egg-white-and-sugar mixture.
