Canzo: Sasso Malascarpa, Mountains and Culture

Canzo combines a strong connection to nature with historic architecture and cultural experiences. The ZSC Sasso Malascarpa is located partly in the municipality of Canzo and includes part of the Foresta Regionale Corni di Canzo. Together with the rock outcrops, karst fields and fossil-rich rocks, this creates a diverse picture of the landscape.

Protected Area and Mountain Landscape

The main access to the Sasso Malascarpa protected area begins in Canzo at the Fonte di Gajum. In addition to rock outcrops and karst fields, the ZSC Sasso Malascarpa features a fossil-rich rock outcrop containing Conchodon fossils. The landscape therefore offers not only woodland and rocky scenery, but also a strong geological focus.

The area around Canzo includes several distinctive elevations. Cornizzolo is a mountain, while Monte Rai, Monte Oriolo and Monte Colla are peaks in the surrounding area or closer vicinity of the town. Those who place mountain landscapes and nature at the centre of their choice of destination will therefore find a range of landscape settings here, without Canzo being reduced to a single excursion destination.

Churches, Hermitage and History

The Eremo di San Miro al Monte hermitage was built between 1643 and 1660. Its veneration of Saint Miro, which is connected with water, has made it a pilgrimage destination for centuries. The site thus combines a precisely datable construction history with a religious tradition that remains a defining feature of the hermitage to this day.

The San Francesco monastery complex in Canzo also reaches far back into history: it was established in the final decades of the 14th century and included a small church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Construction of Canzo's parish church began in May 1728 and was completed at the end of 1752. Its side altars contain statues of the Virgin Mary, Saint Anthony the Abbot and Saint Bernard, created by the sculptor Elia Vincenzo Buzzi between 1761 and 1771.

Theatre, Museums and Palazzi

The Teatro Sociale in Canzo offers a multidisciplinary programme featuring theatre, live music, dance and contemporary circus. Its history is also clearly dated: the Teatro Sociale di Canzo company was founded in April 1828. The theatre was inaugurated on 18 October 1829 with the play Il falso galantuomo, performed by the Compagnia dei Filodrammatici di Milano. Contemporary stage formats thus stand alongside a documented origin in the 19th century.

The Museo Etnografico Dell'Alta Brianza, a museum focusing on ethnography, is located in the immediate vicinity of Canzo. The Museo Moto Guzzi is also nearby. This cultural setting is complemented by Palazzo Secchi and Palazzo Belgioioso, palaces in the area around Canzo.
