Argegno: Historic Paths and Panoramic Views of Lake Como

Argegno combines a medieval village structure, sacred art and paths into the surrounding landscape. The mouth of the Telo River is also known as Telo d’Argento and runs through the medieval village. An old pointed-arch stone bridge connects the two parts of the village. The stone houses, grouped closely together and above the Telo, invite you to take a walk during which panoramic views of Lake Como open up.

Art and History in the Village

The Church of SS. Trinità houses a restored 17th-century painting of the Nativity, which comes from the former church. In the Church of San Sisinnio, you will find finely inlaid furniture from the 18th century, polychrome scagliola altar fronts from the 17th and 18th centuries, and a Renaissance tabernacle. The two churches display different facets of sacred design.

San Sisinnio is also associated with an event in the history of Valle Intelvi: During the uprisings of 1848, the church was the seat of the provisional uprising committee of Valle Intelvi. Argegno’s Living Nativity scene is also known as “I Capell” and is considered one of the oldest traditions in Lombardy. Culture in Argegno thus ranges from works of art and furnishings to a historical event and the Living Nativity scene.

The cultural surroundings also include the Santuario di Sant’Anna, 3 km from Argegno. Historically, it could be reached via an existing mule track through the steep Telo Valley, with small religious wayside shrines along the route. The sanctuary is known for its well-preserved frescoes and stucco decorations.

Paths and Connections

The historic Argegno–Pigra cable car provides a fast connection between Argegno and Pigra. In summer, tourists and hikers use the cable car to reach Pigra as well as the higher destinations of Monte Galbiga, Alpe di Colonno and Tellero. In addition, bus route C21 connects Argegno with San Fedele Intelvi and Casasco d’Intelvi.

The mule track to Sant’Anna passes through Argegno, follows a concrete-and-stone road along the stream that comes from Schignano, and leads past chapels, old structures and woodland areas. Along the way, there are panoramic views of the Telo Valley and Lake Como; the path ends at the Church of Sant’Anna.

Lakeside and Water Activities

At Argegno’s free public gravel beach, you can swim and jump into the water. At the same time, the beach offers panoramic views of the lake and complements walks through the village with a direct connection to the water.
