Breglia between Sanctuary and Mountain Trails

Hikes through Varied Landscapes

The Anello di San Domenico circular trail leads from Breglia to a viewpoint near the Cappella di San Domenico, passing the Santuario della Madonna di Breglia along the way. Another hike to the Rifugio Menaggio begins just beyond the town, near a small church. It initially follows a paved road and then continues through the forest; after 15 minutes, it reaches the refuge via a particularly scenic section. Birch trees and broom grow along the Monte Grona trekking trail. The summits of Cima del Nipoti and Costone del Bregagno are also located in the immediate vicinity of Breglia. Monte Pizzone and Cima dell' Oress are summits in the area around Breglia.

The Santuario della Madonna di Breglia

The Santuario della Madonna di Breglia rises on the summit of Monte Gordola. It is a symbol of local devotion to the Virgin Mary and remains a pilgrimage destination to this day. The temple was built in the second half of the 18th century and houses a revered marble statue of the Madonna. The sanctuary is surrounded by greenery and is reached via a Stations of the Cross dedicated to the “Mysteries of the Rosary.” This gives the site a direct connection to a religious and natural theme closely associated with Breglia.

Churches, a Palace and an Archaeological Trace

The Chiesa di San Gregorio Magno in Breglia dates in its present form from 1873. It replaced an older church that had been destroyed by a major landslide. The present church preserves numerous works from the former place of worship, including an altarpiece from the late 16th century depicting San Gregorio Magno, San Domenico and San Francesco. Slightly above the Chiesa di San Gregorio stands the Palazzo Lucini, also known as the Palazzone. The villa was probably built at the beginning of the 19th century as a summer residence for the Lucini family; from 1892 onward, it was the home of the poet Gian Pietro Lucini and his wife Giuditta Cattaneo.

The Tomba tardoromana is located at the entrance to the cemetery in Breglia. It is a 6th-century AD inhumation burial discovered in 1982 during expansion work at the cemetery and constructed from five granite slabs.
