Val Rezzo between hiking trails, mountain views and San Lucio

Val Rezzo connects trails through several valleys with striking mountain destinations and a distinctive border region around San Lucio. This creates a destination where hiking experiences, landscapes and culture can be combined in a variety of ways. The approximately 45-kilometre-long Sentiero delle 4 Valli leads through Val Sanagra, Val Cavargna, Val Rezzo and Valsolda. It starts in Breglia and ends in Dasio.

Hiking between passes, forests and meadows

On this hiking trail, the 1,102-metre-high Passo Stretto marks the transition between Val Rezzo and Valsolda. The section between the two valleys initially leads through a beech forest scattered with limestone blocks. The trail then reaches Pralungo at an altitude of 1,116 metres. There, an elongated, level meadow with a stream opens up.

Another starting point is Dasio. The Buggiolo–San Lucio hike begins there and reaches, after about 30 minutes, the chapel located at an altitude of 1,330 metres and dedicated to Madonna del Cep. Madonna del Cepp itself features a stone structure and a distinctive bell tower with a circular floor plan. The hike to Sasso della Porta also begins in Dasio, a village in Val Rezzo. On the route from Dasio to Rifugio San Lucio, the trail passes through beech and birch forests.

San Lucio between border and art

The mountain oratory of San Lucio stands at an altitude of 1,542 metres on the Italian side of the Swiss-Italian border, about three metres from the boundary stone. This gives the site a specific landscape setting as well as a clearly recognisable cultural and historical connection. In the Oratorio di San Lucio, the frescoes date from the period between the 15th and 18th centuries. If, on your walks, you wish to take in not only peaks and forests but also sacred art, San Lucio is one of the particularly distinctive destinations in the Val Rezzo area.

Peaks with far-reaching views over the Alps and lakes

From its summit, Monte Garzirola offers views over large parts of the Swiss Val Morobbia, the Lombard lakes and the peaks of the Central Alps. For the Giro del Monte Garzirola, parking is available just above Buggiolo in the village of Dasio. The Giro leads from Buggiolo in Val Rezzo along a road used for agriculture and forestry to the Oratorio di San Lucio. Another mountain destination is Sasso della Porta: from its summit, views extend over Val Cavargna, the surrounding mountains and the plain between the lakes of Piano and Lugano.
