Carugo between forests and history

Carugo combines a distinctive natural environment with local history and religious heritage. The Fontana del Guercio represents the wooded landscape and the protection of amphibians, while churches, chapels and the medieval tower La Torre reveal the different eras of the town.

The Fontana del Guercio and its natural setting

The Fontana del Guercio is a regional protected area established by Regional Law No. 86 of 30 November 1986. The area covers between 27.8 and 35 hectares, lies entirely within the municipality of Carugo and is mostly wooded. In the Carugo area, the Fontana del Guercio in the Parco delle Groane is one of three Sites of Community Importance. A nature trail with eight information panels provides thematic access to the landscape. The small lake within the Fontana del Guercio serves as a spawning ground for amphibians.

Springs, chapels and historic paths

The Cappella di Sant'Ambrogio lies between Carugo and Pozzolo. A path leading to it begins at the Fontana del Guercio. Another notable spring is the Testa del Nan, formerly known as del Neno, which is the source of the Borromeo Canal. The Chiesetta di S. Martino stands on a plateau on the border between Carugo and Mariano, at the site where the Roman road between Milan and Como once ran.

Churches and medieval traces in Carugo

The Chiesa di San Bartolomeo is located in Piazza San Bartolomeo in the built-up center of Carugo. The present church was built between 1933 and 1936 and replaced the earlier church at the foot of Torre Hill. La Torre itself is one of the few still-visible medieval structures in Carugo. The Santuario di San Zeno stands at the entrance to the town on the road to Giussano. The church of San Zeno appears in the writings of the 13th-century historian Goffredo da Bussano. The Santuario was originally dedicated to the holy bishop of Verona; it was later dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of Mary. The feast of San Bartolomeo falls on 24 August and is traditionally celebrated in Carugo on the second Sunday in September. For the year 1258, a destruction at Gattedo is recorded in connection with religious disputes.

Brianza in the 20th century

Recent regional history also has its place in Carugo. The Museo della Brianza nel Novecento is located in Carugo. The Associazione Museo "Nel Novecento" APS preserves and disseminates the memory and history of Brianza in the 20th century.
