Panoramas and Trails at Monte Sasso

Sentiero 7 – Cavallasca begins at Villa Imbonati and, after crossing the provincial road, climbs up to Sasso di Cavallasca. Parking spaces near Sentiero 7 – Cavallasca are located on Via Dunant and Via Monte Sasso.

Rock Art and Traces of Early Settlements

Roccia di Pianvalle features rock carvings with cup marks, spirals, as well as geometric and snake-shaped motifs. Camera Grande is a large rectangular chamber from the Late Bronze Age, dating from the 10th to the 9th century BC, carved into the bedrock of the hill. The Sito di Pianvalle e Fonte della Mojenca in the LocalitĂ  Cavallasca includes the remains of a protohistoric settlement associated with the Golasecca culture and proto-Celtic populations.

Fonte di Majonca also has an unusual natural and rock feature: at the winter solstice on 21 December, sunlight passes through the channel and illuminates the spring emerging from the bedrock. Guided tours are available by appointment for the open areas of the Sito di Pianvalle e Fonte della Mojenca.

Fortifications, Villa Imbonati and Remembrance

Within the fortification complex of Sasso di Cavallasca, Fortino del Monte Sasso is the most important defensive structure. It has a central U-shaped gallery carved into the rock, surrounded by trenches, observation points, mortar emplacements and machine-gun positions. The Cadorna Line concerning Cavallasca lies within the area of Spina Verde Regional Park.

Villa Imbonati in the Località Cavallasca was built by the Imbonati family in 1657. After the victory at Varese on 25 May, Garibaldi established his headquarters at Villa Imbonati in Cavallasca to plan the attack on the heights of San Fermo occupied by General Urban’s troops.

Spina Verde and Regional Character

Spina Verde Regional Park, whose territory extends as far as Cavallasca, has distinctive geological and vegetation-related features. At 610 metres above sea level, Pin Umbrela is the highest point in Spina Verde Park.

The traditional Sagra di San Rocco was announced in Cavallasca for its 46th edition. L’Agrifoglio in the Località Cavallasca offers a seasonal menu shaped by peasant culinary traditions.
