Vassena by the water and on ancient paths

Vassena is a destination for travelers who do not want to plan the lakeshore, paths and culture separately. The lakeside area is relatively secluded, with small piers and quiet corners; at the same time, several paths lead into the surrounding landscape. When choosing your accommodation, the rhythm of your trip is therefore particularly relevant: quiet hours by the water, a walk along the lake or hikes following your own route can be understood as different focuses of a stay.

Quiet lakeside area and bathing area

The beaches of Oliveto Lario, including Vassena, are freely accessible and can be reached on foot or by bicycle. A quiet lakeside promenade leads through Vassena to the harbor. On June 25, 2025, the Vassena bathing area was considered suitable for swimming. This means that by the water, both spending time at the bathing area and moving along the shoreline are central, without limiting Vassena to a day devoted purely to swimming.

Hiking trails with different levels of difficulty

The Sentiero degli Olivi leads from the village of Vassena via trail no. 14 to Magreglio at the foot of Monte San Primo; its route follows an old mule track. For more experienced hikers, the Sentiero degli Olivi continues to Civenna; the route includes a long section with steps.

Another route is Sasso Lentina – Tavola Rotonda. From the hamlet of Castolo, it follows the mule track Sentiero no. 16 to Civenna and the hamlet of Palembri. A hiking trail also offers a short detour to the Chiesina della Madonna di Sumpiazzo, with an impressive panorama of the lake. On this hiking trail, you will also come across the “Grande Panchina.” You should therefore plan the hike according to the specific route and the long section with steps.

Churches, silhouette and harbor area

Vassena’s buildings also add a cultural dimension to a stay. The Chiesa dei SS. Nazaro e Celso complex is a church built at the beginning of the 18th century. Above the state road, the elegant Baroque silhouette of the Santuario della Madonna del Carmine can be seen. The remains of a tower are located in Vassena’s harbor area. Anyone looking for more than just scenery by the lake will find sacred architecture and historical remains here as specific points of interest in the townscape.

Practical information for planning your trip

The period for public scheduled transport is clearly limited: In the 2026 summer timetable, from July 1 to October 4, 2026, Vassena is connected by services departing at 9:03, 11:33, 13:01, 17:48 and 18:38. If you want to combine a stay by the lake with an excursion on the trails or a cultural destination, this timetable should therefore be included in your schedule. When choosing a hotel or other accommodation in Vassena, you can first decide whether the lakeside area, the hiking trails or the buildings will be your main focus. This allows your stay to be shaped around the specific aspects of the town: by the water, on the trails and at the churches, as well as at the remains of a tower.
