Discover Battaglia: History, Religious Architecture and Landscape

When travelling to Battaglia, you can focus on two aspects: medieval architecture and early Renaissance religious buildings, as well as paths and landscapes. Torre Isso, Santa Maria Bressanoro, the arcades of Castelleone and the Bosco Didattico each offer their own highlights. This distinction is useful when choosing your accommodation if you want to consciously include both culture and nature in your travel plans.

Torre Isso and its medieval appearance

Torre Isso has a square ground plan with sides measuring 10 metres and is 47 metres high. It is also known as “il Torrazzo” and served as a fortification and watchtower for observing the surrounding castles. Several loopholes and an elevated entrance are among its architectural features, typical of medieval castle towers. The tower therefore represents a historical side of the area that clearly differs from the religious forms in Bressanoro.

Santa Maria Bressanoro

Santa Maria Bressanoro lies in the countryside outside the town centre. The religious building has a strict Greek-cross ground plan with a massive octagonal tiburium and four arms covered by domes. Terracotta friezes and two 15th-century fresco cycles can be seen there. In the Bressanoro court, “curte de Brixianorum”, the existence of a church has been documented since the 9th century. Santa Maria Bressanoro is one of the most interesting early Renaissance religious buildings in the territory of the Duchy of Milan.

Arcades, Paths and Landscape

In Castelleone, the medieval arcades form an uninterrupted row of shops and workshops along Via Roma as far as Borgo Serio. Coming from the Torrazzo, they are on the right. There is a map of walking and cycling paths for the landscape around Castelleone and the surrounding towns. Near Bressanoro, an easy path through a green meadow bordered by tall trees leads to Santa Maria Bressanoro. These different landscapes are suitable for planning a trip that combines cultural sites with outdoor activity.

At the Bosco Didattico, you can observe rare examples of flora originating not only from the Cremona area. The site was established in 1987 as an experimental station for applied ecology and as a centre for natural history studies. Cascina Battaglia-Mazzolari also has environmental value. Together with the map of walking and cycling paths, the Bosco Didattico broadens the view from the historic buildings to the natural and cultural areas of the surrounding region.

Historical Traces near Castelleone

For the year 1456, a report concerning the Castelleone area mentions a property called “la battaglia in Casso”. The irrigation channel created to water this property is named Orfea; its mention is likewise associated with the year 1456. The so-called Battle of Bodesine took place near Castelleone on 2 June 1213. The precise location of the battle is given as “in campis Bodesinae”. Such clearly dated references lend historical depth to a journey through Battaglia and the surrounding cultural and landscape areas.
