Stagno Lombardo on the Po: Nature and Cultural Heritage

Stagno Lombardo combines a water-shaped landscape with wildlife observation, cycling routes, and individual traces of local history. This makes the town particularly suitable for planning a trip focused not on a single attraction, but on the combination of the river environment, wetlands, and culture.

The Po, Bodri and Floodplain Landscape

Stagno Lombardo borders the Po and the extensive Lanca di Cascina Ferrara over a significant area. The landscape includes the Bodri del Lazzaretto and the Bodri di Gerre del Sole, as well as the winding Fossadone drainage canal. In the wider area around Stagno Lombardo lies the Parco del Po e del Morbasco, in the Po floodplain. The Morbasco, Cerca, and Morta drainage canals run there. The landscape thus extends from the riverbank area into the wider surroundings of the floodplain.

The Bodrio delle Gerre di Stagno Lombardo is a small nature area in the Po floodplain. Wet woodland communities are dominated mainly by Robinia pseudoacacia and Salix alba; shrubs and rare English oaks are also present. Under Lombard nature conservation law, the area is designated as a natural monument.

The kingfisher has been nesting in the Bodrio delle Gerre for several years. Observation points and information boards are available there for observing the local wildlife.

On Foot and by Bicycle

The route along the Cavo Morta can be explored on foot or cycled. In Stagno Lombardo, it follows the riverbank area with near-natural riparian habitats. This dual travel option is practical for planning a day: depending on your plans, the section can be included as either a walking route or a cycling route.

Another option for cycling plans is the circular cycling route “Tra pievi, bodri e Morbasco”. It leads as far as Stagno Lombardo. Together with the route along the Cavo Morta, this provides both a walking and a cycling route description connected with the town, without the two routes following the same course. The circular route complements the riverbank connection with its own cycling route to Stagno Lombardo.

Architecture and Local History

Cascina Alluvioni is an agricultural architectural complex comprising a farmhouse, a manor house, a courtyard, a private chapel, and a historic orangery. Until the end of the 19th century, Cascina Alluvioni was owned by the Germani family. Its present condition must be distinguished from this: Cascina Alluvioni is currently considered completely derelict and at risk of collapse. The former ownership by the Germani family and the present condition refer to different periods in the history of Cascina Alluvioni.

The parish church in Stagno Lombardo is dedicated to Saints Nazarius and Celsus. For those interested in culture, it offers concrete historical references both in the Cascina Alluvioni architectural complex and in the dedication of the parish church to Saints Nazarius and Celsus.
