Castelleone: Churches, Arcades and the Serio Morto Landscape

Castelleone between Sacred Architecture and Urban History

Castelleone combines important sacred buildings with visible traces of its urban history. A defining site is Santa Maria in Bressanoro, which combines Franciscan traditions of devotion with Lombard architectural features. The church can be reached via an easily walkable path in the Bressanoro area, located only a short distance from Castelleone’s built-up centre.

Santa Maria in Bressanoro is a church of 15th-century Lombard art. Its central plan is shaped like a Greek cross. At the top of the drum is a painted Crucifixion with panels depicting scenes from the life of Christ. This makes the building suitable both for visitors interested in regional architecture and for those wishing to view sacred art in its historical context.

Arcades, Museum and Notable Buildings

The Torre Isso, known as Il Torrazzo, stands out in the townscape. The 47-metre-high brick structure is a remnant of Castelleone’s former fortifications. The arcades run past the parish church forecourt and Piazza del Comune towards the former Palazzo Brunenghi, which now houses the town museum and municipal library. Different layers of local history therefore meet in the centre: fortification, public square, ecclesiastical space and urban culture.

The Civico Museo di Castelleone displays worked stone tools from the Mesolithic period. They attest to the presence of hunter settlements on the terraces beside the old riverbed of the Serio, also known as the Serio Morto. This makes it possible to address both the early settlement history and Castelleone’s later development, which remains visible in its towers, arcades and public buildings.

The Santuario della Beata Vergine della Misericordia was begun in 1513 based on a design by Agostino Fondulo and completed in 1525. The sanctuary is located one kilometre from the centre of Castelleone. Inside are 16th-century frescoes depicting Christ and the Apostles on the sides of the drum. The parish church of Saints James and Philip is also a 16th-century work by Agostino Fondulo.

Another historical style is represented by the Arco del Voghera, which locals call Voltone. The arch was designed by Luigi Voghera and built in 1834. It features neoclassical forms, a round arch and two pairs of columns with Ionic capitals. An antiques market also takes place in Castelleone’s historic centre on the second Sunday of every month.

Natural Areas and Routes around Castelleone

The Bosco didattico was established in 1987 as an experimental station for applied ecology and a centre for natural history studies. The Parco della Valle del Serio Morto extends for approximately 4 km along the Serio Morto drainage canal. Swamp and riverbank vegetation can be found in the park’s remaining old river bends.

For a shorter activity, municipal circular route 1 offers a clearly defined option. It is 5 km long, with a stated walking time of 1 hour and cycling time of 20 minutes, and runs entirely on a paved surface. This makes it possible to assess the options for a walk or cycling loop based on length, time and trail conditions.
