San Martino between History and Religious Heritage

The Santuario di San Martino stands on a hill to the right of the Torrente Inferno. The first medieval structure probably served military observation functions before presumably being converted into a place of worship towards the end of the 13th century. The Santuario contains a fresco dating from the 14th century, bearing the names “Madonna del latte” and “Sancta Maria Veteris”.

You can reach the Santuario di San Martino on foot via a road along a Way of the Cross. The Madonna di San Martino is commemorated on the second Sunday in October. Opening hours vary depending on liturgical activities and can be requested directly.

Piana di San Tomaso: Terrace, Agriculture and Village History

Piana di San Tomaso is a natural terrace above Valmadrera, offering views of the lake and Brianza. Characteristic dry-stone structures called “casotte” stand on the plateau. In these simple buildings, farmers stored hay and equipment. From the town centre, Piana di San Tomaso can be reached on foot via easy trails.

The museums on the Piana also give the landscape a historical dimension. The Museo dell’Agricoltura opened in 2000. The Museo della vita contadina in San Tomaso presents objects from agricultural work and domestic life in a permanent exhibition and documents Valmadrera’s rural customs since the 19th century. The Chiesina di San Tomaso preserves its 19th-century structure, but has medieval origins.

Hiking Trails along the Torrente Inferno

The Sentiero delle Vasche runs along the bed of the Torrente Inferno and leads to the Marmitte dei giganti, the so-called potholes. The first section leads from the hamlet of Ceppo to the Cascata De la Prisun, which has a drop of 30 metres. The complete Sentiero delle Vasche loop takes around three to four hours. With a difficulty rating of EE, the trail is classified as more demanding; because of very slippery rocky sections, wearing trekking or hiking shoes is recommended.

Sasso di Preguda and the Traces of the Ice Age

Sasso di Preguda is a boulder of Ghiandone granite measuring around seven metres in height. During the Quaternary Ice Age, glaciers transported it from Val Masino to its present location. The main route to Sasso di Preguda is an easy hike of around 40 to 60 minutes. The different time estimates for the trails help you distinguish between shorter and longer outings that suit your daily rhythm.

Cultural Centre and Botanical Diversity

The Centro Culturale Fatebenefratelli houses a library, an auditorium and several exhibition rooms. The Orto Botanico “Riccardo Villa” is home to more than 900 plant species and is part of the “Sistema museale della Provincia di Lecco”. In Valmadrera, this places cultural spaces and botanical themes alongside religious and rural heritage.
