Primaluna: Art, History and Mountain Landscapes

Primaluna combines the landscape of Valsassina with a remarkable wealth of artistic and historical traces. The area around the town includes extensive fertile meadows crossed by the Torrente Pioverna. Dense chestnut, beech and pine forests grow on the slopes of the Grigna. Here, open spaces, wooded mountain slopes and a stream come together with evidence from several centuries.

Art and History in the Historic Centre

The parish church of San Pietro e Paolo contains three paintings from Titian's school. They were acquired in Venice in 1607 and give the church an art-historical connection to the lagoon city. Primaluna is also home to a Serassi organ, built in 1858 by the Serassi brothers from Bergamo. This creates a cultural tour combining painting, sacred music and the history of important Italian workshops.

Primaluna's historic centre preserves an old medieval village with ancient portals, fresco-decorated churches and the coats of arms of noble families. The remains of the ancient keep of the Torre di Primaluna include the central ground plan and the first ring of walls, with a loophole overlooking the valley. These elements make the former fortification tangible within the townscape, without requiring you to limit yourself to a single attraction.

Museums and Rural Landscapes

The Museo Etnografico was established several years ago to collect evidence of the daily life of earlier generations. Mining, Horse Riding and Trails

The Cortabbio Mining Park offers an underground walk into the interior of the Grigna Settentrionale. The larger complex, with 16 tunnels, includes the Cortabbio mine area known as “nuovo ribasso”. The area lies at an altitude of 552 metres.

Saba Ranch also caters to a variety of interests. Saba Ranch organises one- to three-hour horseback rides along the Pioverna River and offers an American riding school, pony rides, and courses for children and adults. This makes it possible to combine experiencing nature and equestrian sport in formats of different lengths.

Primaluna as a Starting Point for Active Days

The Valsassina cycle route reaches Primaluna and continues to Cortenova, where the route ends. For cycling travellers, not only the town itself but also the course of this route is therefore relevant. Together with the forests on the Grigna, the meadows along the Pioverna and the offerings in Cortabbio, this creates a destination that combines cultural sightseeing with activity in the mountain landscape.
