Calolziocorte combines sacred architectural heritage, wetlands, botanical diversity and local events. The Santuario di Santa Maria del Lavello, medieval churches, the Palude di Brivio and various markets provide cultural, nature-related and seasonal highlights. This allows you to plan your trip around your interest in culture, the landscape or a suitable event date.
Lavello and sacred architectural heritage
The Santuario di Santa Maria del Lavello was built around the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries by the Brothers of the Order of the Servants of Mary. It is a stop on the international cultural and religious Cloister Route (Strada dei Chiostri). At this site, you can combine local sacred history with a cultural and religious travel route.
The Chiesa di San Lorenzo Vecchio is an example of medieval architecture and preserves an extensive fresco cycle. The Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo in Foppenico is described in a note dated 20 May 1844 as an octagonal temple. In 1014, Lavello was associated with the designation “castello”.
Palude di Brivio and botanical diversity
The SIC Palude di Brivio covers 302 hectares between the municipalities of Calolziocorte, Monte Marenzo, Brivio and Cisano Bergamasco and lies entirely within the boundaries of Parco Adda Nord. The Palude di Brivio is home to one of the few populations of the European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis) in the Upper Po Valley. Via Lago Vecchio in Calolziocorte provides access to the Palude di Brivio.
The Giardino Botanico di Villa De Ponti in Calolziocorte covers one hectare and is home to around 500 different plant species. The range of natural attractions therefore extends from an extensive wetland and its rare wildlife to the diversity of different plant species in a botanical garden.
Festivals, markets and scheduled events
The Fiera Del Lavello takes place on the second Sunday in September in Parco Martiri delle Foibe on the banks of the Lavello. The Mercatino dell'Antico Monastero takes place from March to November on the second Sunday of every month in Parco Martiri delle Foibe. Both events are therefore held in the same park, while their periods differ.
On 8 December, the Fera di “Pomm” takes place in Centro/Casale and includes the sale of fruit and confectionery. If you would like to plan your trip around a specific date, events from March to December are therefore available, each with its own location and time.
An approximately 18-kilometre route
The “La ciclopedonale dei laghi di Garlate e Olginate” is approximately 18 kilometres long. Its approximate length helps you fit a cycling or walking stage of the desired distance into your travel plans.
