Nature between mountain stream and karst

Fiumelatte is a small village with an unusual natural feature: the Fiumelatte mountain stream runs from its source to the lake over a distance of around 250 m. The foaming water gives it a milky-white color. This provides a clear point of interest if you are planning a stay combining the lakeshore, nature observation and geological features.

Above the village of the same name in the municipality of Varenna, the Grotta di Fiumelatte opens at 325 m above sea level. It is one of the most striking karst phenomena in the entire Grigna massif. At the same time, it is not a spring that flows year-round, but has a seasonal pattern with alternating periods of low and high water. An experiment confirmed the direct connection between the grotto and the karst system in the upper part of the mountain.

Leonardo da Vinci mentioned Fiumelatte under the name “Fiumelaccio” on folio 214 of the Codice Atlantico.

Paths around Fiumelatte

If you would like to reach the springs on foot, the route from Piazza San Giorgio in Varenna follows Via Roma and passes the cemetery before reaching a staircase. The path then runs halfway up the slope, parallel to the lake, as far as Fiumelatte. The lower variant of the Sentiero del Viandante also passes the Fiumelatte springs between Lierna, Varenna and Perledo.

Near the Sorgente di Fiumelatte, there is a small, well-equipped picnic area directly by the river. The village of Fiumelatte, crossed by the river of the same name, can be reached from Varenna town center via an approximately 20-minute walk along a section of the Greenway dei Patriarchi. In Varenna, the Passeggiata degli Innamorati is a short lakeside walkway from the ferry landing to the town center.

Varenna as a starting point

For your journey, the Varenna–Esino Lario–Perledo station is listed in the Varenna area for train connections. Car ferries connect Varenna with the municipalities of Bellagio, Cadenabbia and Menaggio. This makes it possible to include Fiumelatte and the lakeside villages in your stay without focusing solely on one path or one attraction.

More impressions in the surrounding area

At the nearby Castello di Vezio, visitors can explore the gardens, underground areas and ring wall, view works of art and climb the tower, which houses a permanent exhibition about the Lariosaurus. The terraced grounds of the nearby Villa Monastero include a path about two kilometers long that leads to the nearby hamlet of Fiumelatte.

The village’s culinary side also has a festive connection: the program for the 2025 festival included Canestri and Tortelli della Madonna.
