Vercurago between the Lakeshore, Sanctuary and Rocca dell’Innominato

Chapels, Valletta and early Church history

The Viale delle Cappelle comprises ten chapels with wooden statues depicting episodes from the life of Saint Girolamo. La Valletta can be reached from the sanctuary via a devotional path displaying paintings from the life of Saint Girolamo. Saint Girolamo lived with his orphans in Valletta, which is also home to the Church of the Resurrection. The Fonte del miracolo still provides clear water that pilgrims can drink.

The parish church of Saints Gervasius and Protasius is also among the few churches mentioned before the year 1000. At the Casa Museale Le Sorgenti, evidence of the social, historical and religious work of Caterina and Giuditta Cittadini preserves the memory of this part of the area’s history. The museum mainly displays original furniture and objects from that period in a completely preserved historic setting.

Rocca dell’Innominato and literary traces

The remains of the Rocca dell’Innominato include a preserved tower, damaged at the top, and sections of the surrounding walls. The ruins lie on the rocky ridge that forms Vercurago’s northern boundary. According to tradition, the Rocca dell’Innominato was one of the residences of Francesco Bernardino Visconti. Alessandro Manzoni drew inspiration from Francesco Bernardino Visconti for the character of the Innominato in I Promessi Sposi. In this way, the site combines visible historical traces with a connection to Italian literature.

The Rocca dell’Innominato can be reached from Località San Girolamo in Vercurago via a mule track and a footpath. You can reach the Castello dell’Innominato from the Santuario di San Girolamo via an easy, panoramic route in about 30 minutes. The two descriptions provide different specific points of reference for routes around the historic sites.

Lakeshore, cycle path and arrival

Vercurago’s lakeside promenade extends from the mouth of the Gallavesa stream along the entire northern shore of Lake Garlate. Vercurago is also crossed by the Ciclovia dei Laghi di Garlate e Olginate. This forms part of the approximately 300-kilometre Brezza cycling and walking route, which connects Switzerland with the Po Valley along the Adda River. Some train services to and from Bergamo stop at Vercurago station.
