Canegrate: Bronze Age, Culture and Roccolo Landscape

Archaeology with a direct connection to the town

One particularly tangible connection to Canegrate's history can be found on Via Bramante: in 1952, further graves from Canegrate's Bronze Age necropolis were discovered during foundation work at Casa Colombo. This find connects a specific place within the municipality with the region's early history and makes the Bronze Age an important theme when exploring Canegrate.

The archaeological outdoor route is considered an open-air museum and runs from the Church of S. Colomba to the Catarabia Cultural Centre. It includes the interpretive station “Site of the discovery - Casa Colombo” and another interpretive station focusing on industrial archaeology. The route therefore leads from a documented discovery site to various historical themes without limiting archaeology to a single period.

At the Ferrante Rittatore Vonwiller Archaeological Department, you can see scenic reconstructions of two Bronze Age graves. A copy of an urn from Grave 75 in Canegrate is also located there. At the Polo Culturale Catarabia, visitors can immerse themselves in prehistory using the latest-generation 3D viewers. This gives you access to a combination of the discovery site, reconstruction and digital interpretation.

Roccolo landscape and woodland

Parco del Roccolo is located in the vicinity of Canegrate. The Parco Locale di Interesse Sovracomunale del Roccolo covers 1,810 hectares and includes the six municipalities of Arluno, Busto Garolfo, Canegrate, Casorezzo, Nerviano and Parabiago. Its size and cross-municipal extent give the landscape a significantly broader framework than the individual municipal area.

Bosco del Roccolo lies between Parabiago and Canegrate and is one of the largest woodland areas in Parco del Roccolo. It consists of a circular wooded area of hornbeams and English oaks. Those who wish to include woodland landscapes and quiet paths in their trip alongside historical themes will find a clear second focus in this setting. The natural arch Arco della Pace is also located in the wider regional surroundings of Canegrate.

Culture, parks and regional excursions

Palazzo Visconti-Castelli is a historic building in Canegrate. The surrounding area also contains several distinct cultural attractions: Palazzo Cicogna is a palace, the Civico Museum of Busto Arsizio is a museum, Villa Visconti Borromeo Arese Litta is a palace, and Villa Ottolini-Tovaglieri is also a palace. These places broaden the cultural perspective beyond Canegrate without equating their location as surrounding attractions with the town centre.
