Desio: Museums, Park and History in Italy

Art and Sacred Culture in Desio

The Museo Scalvini houses a donation made by Giuseppe Scalvini to the city of Desio in 1999. It consists of 36 sculptures and has a clear focus on modern sculpture. For your visit, time slots are available from Friday to Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.; visits on Thursdays are possible by appointment only. These fixed time slots are particularly relevant if you want to combine several cultural sites.

The birthplace of Pope Pius XI was converted into a museum in 1939, immediately after his death. The Museo Pio XI also includes a section dedicated to contemporary sacred art. Its most valuable piece is a radio set personally built by Guglielmo Marconi and presented to the pope in 1931. Biography, religious art and the history of technology therefore come together here in a closely defined cultural context.

Another cultural facet is the multimedia exhibition “Costruirò la Casa della Pace”. It is partly interactive and therefore also appeals to visitors who want to explore cultural topics through different media.

Villa, Park and Industrial History

The Ex Tettoia Gavazzi is the last surviving testimony of the former industrial complex of the silk mill owned by brothers Egidio and Pio Gavazzi. This complex was established in 1869 and remained one of Italy’s most important silk mills for more than a century.

Villa Cusani Tittoni Traversi was built as a “Villa di delizia”, meaning a country estate used by aristocratic families during their leisure stays. The villa’s first built core dates back to a Franciscan monastery founded in the Desio area in 1290. Today, Parco Cusani Traversi Tittoni is a public park and has been one of the early Italian examples of an English landscape garden since 1793.

An Event on the Calendar
