San Colombano al Lambro offers a simultaneous focus on history, sacred art and the hilly landscape of the Po Valley. This creates a destination with a range of different highlights: historic buildings, collections, parks and nature observation represent different ways of getting to know the area. You can therefore plan your trip around culture, spirituality or nature.
Museum and Historic Buildings
A good starting point for a cultural exploration is the “Virginio Caccia” Paleontological and Archaeological Museum. Its fossil and archaeological collections contribute to an understanding of the origins and history of the Colle di San Colombano as a unique natural feature of the Po Valley.
Parco Lazzaretto is a 7,950-square-metre municipal park with planted and equipped green spaces. Its precise octagonal shape is connected to the original boundary dating from the 17th century. The park includes a monumental complex with an octagonal main chapel from the 17th century and two smaller hexagonal side chapels from the 19th century. Historically, the Lazzaretto was used as a lazaret.
The churches also span several eras. The parish church of San Colombano Abate has a 19th-century neoclassical façade and three naves; inside are paintings by Bernardino Campi and Gian Giacomo Barbelli. The Church of San Francesco dates from 1580, while the Valbissera Dominican complex dates from the 16th century.
In the historic centre, the birthplace of Don Carlo Gnocchi has been preserved in a typical 19th-century courtyard. The Portone was built in 1691 by Charles II, King of Spain, as the royal entrance to the Oppidum Insigne. Guided visits to the Church of San Giovanni Battista are available by prior reservation. The same applies to the Oratorio di San Rocco for groups.
Hilly Landscape and Birdwatching
In the hilly landscape of San Colombano al Lambro, there is an equipped rest area at Moretto.
Along the Sentiero Natura, the Laghetti di Val Panate are a preferred observation point for resident and migratory birds. At the bird-of-prey observation station, you can watch raptors migrating south from Central Europe in autumn. This seasonal aspect makes the area particularly interesting when planning a trip focused on nature observation.
Stage, Festival and Local Insights
Stage 13 of the Cammino di San Colombano runs from Sant’Angelo Lodigiano to San Colombano al Lambro and is 13.1 kilometres long. This distance provides clear guidance for your personal planning. At the festival of San Colombano, celebrated annually on 21 November, a ceremonial procession takes place through the streets of the historic centre.
Another historical aspect is represented by the Fonti Minerali Gerette, which were opened to the public in 1926. In addition, guided visits to wineries are offered in San Colombano al Lambro for groups and school classes.
