Historic Architecture and Religious Sites

The founding of the Chiesa Prepositurale di San Vittore Martire has been documented since 846. The Basilica di San Vittore Martire was built in the neoclassical style based on designs by Besi and Aluisetti. At the basilica, the surviving right-hand bell tower was raised to a height of 58.40 metres.

The religious tradition also includes an event that took place on 24 April 1583. According to contemporary reports, a miracle occurred in a small chapel containing a Pietà: the Madonna depicted there wept tears of blood. Saint Charles Borromeo then ordered the planning of the Santuario della Vergine Addolorata. This story gives Rho’s sacred heritage a concrete temporal and narrative outline.

Public Art and New Urban Architecture

Inaugurated on 16 April 2015, Piazza Costellazione is a permanent work of public art made from 250,000 blue ceramic tiles. The mosaic symbolises the firmament and the constellation Aquarius; a “Milky Way” runs through it. The interplay of material, colour and cosmic symbolism defines the character of this public artwork.

The Teatro Civico Roberto de Silva in Rho was built from 2015 to 2021 based on a design by the architectural firm Arassociati and urban planning by Studio Banfi e Pezzetta. The building complements the historical and sacred themes with a more recent urban perspective. It was constructed after Villa Burba was completed in 1665. In this way, the architectural spectrum extends into the 21st century.

The Ciclovia Pianura Olona begins there at Piazza San Vittore, includes a visit to the Santuario della Vergine Addolorata and Villa Burba, and runs along Corso Europa.
