Culture between museum, church and art

Santo Stefano Ticino can be discovered through historical evidence, sacred architecture and contemporary art. The Museo del Risorgimento displays numerous historical exhibits from the period of the Risorgimento. In the Chiesa Santo Stefano Protomartire, completed in 1907, the interior is divided into three aisles with ten columns and adopts a not entirely pure neoclassical style. The main altar is in the Baroque style and probably dates from the 18th century.

The works of art in the town also add their own distinctive touches. The “Murales 1975” mural is dedicated to the memory of the Cervi brothers, Emilian partisans who became victims of Nazi fascism. The Palcoscenico della Cultura displays the artist Urano Palma’s “VISUALI AEREE” works in the background; their theme is water, air and music. This installation includes 70 terracotta panels on the side wings and three on the water house. The town hall meeting room in Santo Stefano Ticino also contains a bas-relief by the contemporary artist Ugo La Pietra. The Bassorilievo dell'Unità d'Italia depicts the historical path from the first mottos of Italian unification to the founding of the Italian Republic.

South of the town, near Cascina Barera on the border with Magenta and Marcallo con Casone, the Chiesa di Santa Maria alla Barera was built in 1957. It is largely abandoned and currently requires careful restoration work. This place therefore represents another, more understated way of approaching the history of Santo Stefano Ticino.

Flat agricultural landscape and routes for active days

The Parco del Gelso also extends into Santo Stefano Ticino. It includes a largely flat agricultural landscape with a well-preserved and still-used irrigation system consisting of irrigation ditches fed by the Villoresi and numerous fontanili. It is also characterised by an extensive network of historic, tree-lined roads connecting numerous rural farmsteads. In the Parco del Gelso, landscape, agriculture and established routes exist side by side.

For active exploration, the Santo Stefano Ticino–Corbetta circular route is a specific option: it starts and ends at Stazione FS Santo Stefano Ticino - Corbetta, is 18 kilometres long and can be completed on foot or by bicycle. The 18-kilometre distance provides a specific reference point for planning the day on this route. The Festa dell’Agricoltura offers food and drink. A night walk entitled “Vedere le “Lucciole” Vidè i lusirò” was also announced for Thursday, 28 May, during which fireflies can be observed during their mating season.
