Canonica between Architectural History and Nature Trails

Canonica can be discovered through two clearly distinct interests: historic buildings and trails through natural areas. If you are interested in culture, you will find works by Giovanni Battista Zalli in Santa Maria della Neve; if you would like to combine landscape and environmental education, the Valle del Cantalupo begins near the Canonica cemetery. Frescoes, Villas and Baroque Architecture

The frescoes in the church and sacristy of Santa Maria della Neve, as well as the oil paintings of the Sacred Heart and of St. Luigi, are by Giovanni Battista Zalli. The works are dated 1840 and give the church interior a clear historical reference. Canonica's architectural history also reflects different periods. Villa Taverna was built by Count Francesco Taverna on a 16th-century fortification. The Baroque Oratorio di Sant'Eurosia was built in 1735. The chronological classification of the former ensemble is important here: the Oratorio di Sant'Eurosia formerly formed a coherent historic ensemble together with Villa Taverna, whose avenue created a line of sight to the villa's entrance.

The Valle del Cantalupo and Trails in Nature

The Valle del Cantalupo begins near the Canonica cemetery. At Cascina Chignolo, there is a dense artificial stand of Pinus strobus, which is a preferred location for environmental education trails. If you are interested in plants, landscapes and observing natural connections, this area is one of the subjects you can take into account when planning your trip.

Another specific trail connection leads from the Canonica bridge to Albiate: the walk takes about an hour. During an excursion, the spring flora was observed and the “Roggia del Principe” trail was followed in order to learn about the natural environment, water quality and the general condition of the Lambro River. This means that the focus is not only on physical activity, but also on water, vegetation and experiencing the river landscape.

The Villa Ravizza palace is located in the immediate vicinity of Canonica.
