Monza Between Motor Racing, Cathedral and Parkland

Monza combines motor racing, courtly architectural history, sacred art and extensive parkland. The Cathedral and Teodolinda’s History

The Duomo di Monza was founded at the end of the 6th century by Queen Teodolinda as a chapel of the nearby royal palace. However, the Cappella di Teodolinda and the Corona Ferrea can only be planned with an important visitor rule in mind: a reservation is always required, and the visit always takes place with an escort. If you would like to combine sacred art and medieval history, this visit is therefore one of the appointments you should arrange in advance.

Villa Reale and Civic Collections

The Villa Reale di Monza also tells the story of the city’s architectural development. Construction was assigned to the imperial architect Giuseppe Piermarini in 1777 and completed within three years. The Musei Civici Monza offer a different approach to local culture: since 1935, they have preserved works of art and artefacts owned by the Municipality of Monza and present 13 sections with 140 pieces from the city’s art collections.

At the Museo e Tesoro del Duomo di Monza, the collection ranges from Queen Teodolinda’s heritage to contemporary art. It tells of the origins and history of Monza Cathedral, its treasury and the Lombard queen. In Monza, you therefore encounter both individual buildings and collections that make religious, political and artistic themes visible across long periods of time.

Spiritual Sites and Sacred Tradition

The Santuario della Madonna delle Grazie has a clearly documented history: its foundation stone was laid on 8 September 1463, and the Franciscans celebrated the first Mass there on 18 October 1467. The sanctuary offers a place for personal prayer, the celebration of the Eucharist and confession. The Chiesa San Gerardo al Corpo is dedicated to Saint Gerardo dei Tintori, the co-patron saint of the city of Monza.

Gardens and Paths Through Nature

The Giardini Reali extend across around 40 hectares around the Villa Reale. They are among the first examples of an English garden in Northern Italy. Paths through the trees and shrubs lead to a small lake. If you would like to set aside time outdoors between museum visits and historic interiors, these garden paths offer an independent part of the Monza experience.

Parco di Monza and Motor Racing Access

Parco di Monza covers 720 hectares and has cycle paths. It was established on 14 September 1805 at the instigation of Emperor Napoleon as a model agricultural estate and hunting ground. For your planning, visitor access at the Autodromo di Monza is also important: it is open to visitors all year round, except during the Christmas holidays. Access is via Vedano al Lambro and, during events, also via Biassono and Santa Maria alle Selve.

An Insight into Milling History

The multimedia video museum of Mulino Colombo is open to visitors and contains 500 documents about the mill and the mills in the area. This place of technological and everyday history thus complements the major themes of the cathedral, villa, museums and racetrack with a direct view of the region’s milling tradition.
