Verano Brianza: Churches, Mill Route and Parkland

Verano Brianza combines church architecture, historic mill sites, parkland design and murals to create a varied townscape. Its architectural history spans the former Convento dei Cappuccini from the late 16th century, the chapels added in the 19th century and the new Chiesa dei Santi Nazaro e Celso, built in 1935. The townscape features individual buildings alongside traces of the former mill landscape and a town park.

Churches and Historic Architecture

The new Chiesa dei Santi Nazaro e Celso was built in 1935 to a design by architect Ottavio Cabiati. The Chiesa della Madonna di Caravaggio, also known as Chiesa Vecchia, represents a different period. It has two chapels dedicated to the Sacred Heart and the Holy Cross. Both chapels were added in the second half of the 19th century. The church architecture thus ranges from a new building dating from 1935 to a structure with chapels added later.

The former Convento dei Cappuccini in the so-called Curt del Cunvent is a restored example of late-16th-century monastic architecture. Surviving features include a covered well, an open cloister and an icehouse. The monastery was built at the instigation of Cardinal Carlo Borromeo.

Mills on the Lambro

At the Mulino Resica, the room containing the millstones has been preserved. The Bevilacqua wool mill is an example of industrial archaeology in the Lambro Valley. The Via dei Mulini runs through Verano Brianza along the Lambro River and passes the sites of the four former mills Ponte, Resica, Bistorgio and Filo. The Via dei Mulini therefore forms a historic mill section along the Lambro, linking four former sites with different names.

Parkland and Townscape

Verano Park, also known as Parco della Pace, is a town park beside Verano Brianza's large water tower. It includes a small biopond and a viewing hill. The park also combines design elements from English and Italian gardens. The biopond, viewing hill and combination of English and Italian garden forms shape the park's design.

Murals and Surroundings

The murals at Via Umberto I, near house number 13, decorate the arcades of an old courtyard. Some of them are inspired by the life of astronaut Paolo Nespoli, who was born in Verano Brianza. The La Testimone Velata Di Mariani Isarella museum is also located in the immediate vicinity of Verano Brianza. The Palazzo Vittorio Veneto palace is in the surrounding area of Verano Brianza. The murals remain focused on the old courtyard on Via Umberto I; the museum and palace add to the surroundings of Verano Brianza.
