Ottobiano between karting, church and Roman history

Ottobiano combines motorsport with a multifaceted local history. The municipality is home to South Milano Karting, an international track for motocross, motard and karting. The track was established in 1999 with a single asphalt circuit. South Milano Karting also hosted the Motocross World Championship in 2017.

San Michele Arcangelo and sacred architecture

The parish of San Michele Arcangelo is located at Via San Michele 1, 27030 Ottobiano (PV). The Church of San Michele Arcangelo was completely rebuilt from 1747 onward and completed in 1772. Its structure consists of two parts: one dates from the 15th century, the other from the 18th century.

Inside there are five altars: the main altar and the altars of Suffragio, Carmine, Saint Joseph and the Cross. The artistic details include a painting depicting Saint Michael and Saint Roch beside the Virgin Mary. The bell tower is 55 metres high and is considered one of the tallest in the Lomellina.

Archaeological traces around Ottobiano

Ottobiano’s most important Celtic-Roman settlement was located on what is now Dosso delle scuole. The hill was originally larger and higher and was protected from flooding by the nearby Torrente Erbognone. This makes it possible to link the early settlement history spatially with the landscape and the watercourse.

The ancient local history also includes the Necropolis della Rotorta. It comprises around 40 burials and is dated to the period from 50 BC to approximately 100 AD. The Valpersa coin hoard consisted of around 450 coins and dates from the 3rd century AD.

Castle history and modern architecture

The existence of a castle in Ottobiano is documented by a feudal deed of sale from 1481. In the first half of the 16th century, the castle was considered to be well preserved; it was known as “castrum Vitabiani” and had a drawbridge, a moat and adjoining buildings. A later architectural reference can be found in the Vitale cemetery chapel: its reconstruction in 1928–1929 was the work of Piero Bottoni.

Near Ottobiano, the Via delle Gallie runs south of the Volpina and Bonaparte farmsteads. Along the Via delle Gallie, when water levels are low near the locks of the Torrente Erbognone in the Travacchino Busca locality, the remains of the piers of an earlier bridge emerge. These spatial connections complete the picture of a place where ancient, medieval and modern history are rooted in a close regional context.
