Historic Buildings in Vidigulfo

Vidigulfo brings together several distinctive themes in Italian local history: a medieval castle, churches with clearly discernible construction phases, and a landscape where waterways, wetland vegetation and predominantly agricultural areas meet. The present-day Castello dei Landriani is a 14th-century building. It was built on the site of an earlier castle dating from the 11th century.

The Chiesa di San Siro Vescovo also reflects changes over the centuries. It was initially dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel; in 1450, Saint Siro was chosen as its patron saint. In Mandrino, this church has a three-nave interior ending in a semicircular apse. The central nave features three barrel vaults, while each of the two side aisles has three groin vaults.

In Cavagnera stands the Chiesa di Maria Santissima Assunta, which was completely renovated in 1937. As part of this work, the church was extended towards the façade, and the façade was completely redesigned. The bell tower is stylistically reminiscent of Pavia’s old Romanesque towers.

Wetlands and River Landscapes

The Parco Locale di Interesse Sovracomunale del Lambro Meridionale e del Ticinello extends across Siziano, Vidigulfo and Torrevecchia Pia. Its landscape follows the Lambro Meridionale and the Ticinello Canal. The park mainly comprises agricultural land, forestry areas and zones with moisture-loving herbaceous vegetation. This combination gives the surroundings a distinctly rural character.

The biotopes of the Parco del Lambro Meridionale e del Ticinello include reed beds, remnants of alder woods and riparian forests. Among the species protected there are the licena delle paludi, the black-winged stilt, the kingfisher and the western marsh harrier. This creates a nature-focused aspect that clearly differs from Vidigulfo’s churches and historic buildings. In addition, Vidigulfo’s outdoor fitness area includes adjustable-resistance equipment and street-workout facilities. The equipment is designed for different levels of use and user groups.

Local Orientation and Regional Cuisine

One culinary aspect of Vidigulfo is represented by the traditional autumn festival “Busecca e Castégn”. At its eighth edition, tripe and chestnuts were offered for purchase, either to eat on site or take away. Together with the Biblioteca di Vidigulfo, this festival adds local everyday life and cultural activities to the picture of the town: the library is a cultural institution and is integrated into the regional library system as a “Biblioteca di base”.
