Delebio: Trails, Churches and Mountain History

The Sentiero Valtellina passes through Delebio and forms part of a 114-kilometre route between Colico and Bormio. The route can be used by bicycle, on foot or on horseback. This allows you to plan your journey around a route whose means of transport is just as clearly defined as its course through the town.

Val Lesina and the Trails on Monte Legnone

The Val Lesina Regional Forest lies entirely within the Parco Regionale delle Orobie Valtellinesi. Mountain experiences begin at Alpe Legnone, where the Percorso Didattico Legnone starts. For a longer section, it follows a military mule track belonging to the Cadorna Line. The Percorso Faunistico Legnone offers a different perspective. This educational themed trail describes the diversity of habitats in Val Lesina and the wildlife found there.

Directions to Alpe Legnone

Alpe Legnone can be reached from Delebio on foot via the agro-silvo-pastoral road that climbs from there to Località Osiccio; the car can be parked in Osiccio. The military roads of the Cadorna Line on Monte Legnone date from the First World War and connected Pagnona with Delebio. For planning purposes, the access route to the Alpe, the nature trail and the historic route can therefore be considered as distinct points of interest.

Churches and Religious Heritage

The Gesiöö del San Gottardo is one of Delebio’s oldest roadside chapels. It depicts the Immaculate Conception with Saint Gotthard and Saint Dominic. At the same time, the Gesiöö recalls that Delebio was the first place in Valtellina to receive public lighting, in 1895. The Cammino Mariano delle Alpi follows the same route through Delebio as the Sentiero del Viandante and adds a Marian reference to the network of trails, that is, a connection dedicated to the veneration of Mary.

Santa Domenica is a 12th-century church near the site where the Battle of Delebio between the Milanese and Venetians took place in 1432. San Carpoforo is Delebio’s parish church, richly decorated with frescoes, and the place where the municipality was proclaimed in 1204. Both churches combine sacred architecture with significant landmarks in the town’s history.

Rural Architecture and Craftsmanship

The Colondello dei Bùlat is a traditional rural residential complex in Delebio. Houses and stables are grouped around a central courtyard. The historic Mulino Mazza was restored by the Pro Loco di Delebio and contains original machinery that is still operational. The Oratorio di San Gerolamo is a former private chapel of the Peregalli family and an important example of Rococo heritage in Valtellina.
