Chiareggio between the Glacier Trail and Alpine Landscape

Chiareggio brings together a glacier educational trail, a high-altitude hiking trail, geology on display and local history passed down through the generations, creating a destination with many different perspectives. The Sentiero glaciologico Vittorio Sella glacier educational trail begins in Chiareggio and leads towards the Ventina Glacier. The Alta Via della Valmalenco is a high-altitude hiking trail with eight stages and a length of approximately 110 kilometres that passes through the Chiareggio basin. The trails therefore appeal both to visitors interested in glaciers and to travellers considering a multi-stage high-altitude route.

Hiking Trails and Via Ferrata

The Ferrata del Torrione Porro begins in Chiareggio and is a via ferrata of medium difficulty in Valmalenco. The approach to the Gerli-Porro mountain refuge takes approximately one hour on foot. The via ferrata adds a sporting element between the glacier trail and the high-altitude route, offering a clearly defined activity for planning your excursion.

Geology on Display

The Chiareggio Geological Park extends across two hectares of open, wooded land and is divided into three learning areas: a covered area with four geological panels, a path lined with various rock samples and a natural terrace with two geological maps. As an open-air site with illustrative materials and different types of rock, it conveys geological and natural-history aspects of the Alpine region. The combination of panels, the sample path and maps leads from individual rocks to broader connections within the Alpine landscape.

Nature at the Village Entrance

Marmots live near the Geological Park at the entrance to Chiareggio. For visitors interested in nature, this adds a tangible wildlife aspect to the study of rocks.

Church and Muretto History

The Church of Sant’Anna in Chiareggio was founded in 1688 at the request of the notary Lorenzo Chiesa. It stands along the ancient Muretto route, which connected Italy with Switzerland. The feast day of the Church of Sant’Anna is celebrated every year on the fourth Sunday in July with religious celebrations and traditional festivities. The church, historic route and feast day thus give Chiareggio three clearly distinct cultural points of interest.

Historic Rest Stop and Regional Cuisine

The Osteria del Bosco in Chiareggio, or more precisely in the Bosco district, can be traced back to the Middle Ages as a hospice. It served people and horses as a place to rest and spend the night along the historic “cavallera” road over the Muretto. Typical Valtellina dishes regularly feature on the menu in Chiareggio. In this way, historic routes and regional cuisine come together as a tangible part of the local character.

Alpe Cian Làzer

Alpe Cian Làzer comprises seven buildings. The dairy and the two animal shelters retain their original construction, while the cheese dairy and the residential building have been modernised.
