Caspoggio: Discover Trails, History and Mountain Landscapes

Caspoggio combines a variety of hiking and cycling routes with a concentrated local history. Among old houses, churches, chapels and paths through the mountain landscape, you will find different ways to discover the area at your own pace. If you would like to combine nature experiences with culture on your trip to Italy, Caspoggio offers several clearly distinguishable points of interest for this purpose.

Hiking Trails for Different Levels

The “I maggenghi di Caspoggio” hike offers two climbs of different lengths. The route to Sant’Antonio is listed as having an elevation gain of 200 metres and a walking time of about 1.5 hours, while the route to Motta has an elevation gain of 350 metres and takes about 2.5 hours. The route leads from Sant’Antonio via the “Sentiero del Latte” to Motta di Caspoggio. The return journey can follow a circular route via Prabello and Santa Elisabetta.

The “I sentieri del latte a Caspoggio” route is approximately 3 km long, has an elevation gain of around 430 metres and takes about 1.5 hours to walk. It is intended for hiking; with minor variations, it can also be cycled. Another option is “Lo sci a Caspoggio”, which is approximately 9 km long, has an elevation gain of around 750 metres and takes about 4 hours to walk. This route is also intended for hiking and can be cycled with minor variations.

Alpine Pastures and Mountain Activities

Alpe Prabello is considered a popular destination for hikes and cycling tours. There is an equipped picnic area next to the chapel. Those interested in vertical mountain activities will also find the Ferrata Vigneron in Caspoggio. The via ferrata is athletic, vertical and exposed, while presenting no particular technical difficulties. Long vertical slabs are extensively secured with metal rungs and a tightly tensioned cable.

The access point to the Ferrata Vigneron is near the Castello district. Parking is available near the roundabout on the provincial road through Valmalenco, at the turnoff to Caspoggio.

History Between the Forest and the Town Centre

The ruins of the ancient Castello di Caspoggio can still be seen in the forests of Castello. In the town itself, the “Erminio Dioli pittore” tour leads through Caspoggio along streets in the town centre.

The medieval “Truna” is located in the historic centre. It consists of houses built directly next to one another and has only two openings for entry and exit. Another distinctive testimony to the older building fabric is the Cà dei Muscun, one of the oldest houses in Valmalenco. Its façade bears the year 1504.

Religious buildings also shape Caspoggio. The “Cavalera” is a developed religious path that leads from the picture chapel in Contrada Negrini via the chapel of Bricalli to Curada Bassa. It includes two niches and a wooden crucifix attached to a building. The present parish church, Chiesa dei SS. Rocco, Fabiano e Sebastiano, was built in 1661 and consecrated in 1666. It was extended in the 1960s, and its façade was redesigned.

In the Pantanaccio district, the Chiesa di Santa Elisabetta was built between 1719 and 1721. Together with the parish church, the “Cavalera” and the historic houses, it forms a dense cultural network of paths that can easily be combined with walks through Caspoggio.

More Destinations for Active Days

The Centro della Montagna – Zenith includes, among other features, a pump track. Caspoggio can also be included in a hike along the Alta Via della Valmalenco: From one stage of this high-altitude route, you can descend to Caspoggio via the former ski slopes and then take public transport back to Torre di Santa Maria.
