Val Venina extends across the Piateda area and is divided into four smaller valleys: Val d’Ambria, Val Caronno, also known as Scais, Val Vedello, and Val Venina itself.
Val Venina and the trails around Ambria
From Ambria, you can reach the hiking and mountaineering trails of Val Venina. For orientation in the area, the road from Piateda to Vedello leads into the valley. At the fork, the left branch leads to Agneda and Val Caronno, while the right branch leads to Ambria. When planning your day, choosing the specific valley area is therefore just as relevant as the exact starting point in the Ambria district.
Mountain nature and river landscapes
The rare endemic plant “Viola del Comolli” grows in the mountains of Piateda. Nature experiences are also a central feature along the quieter route from Piateda to Castione. This route is recommended for families and children and offers views of river birds at the bends in the river, as well as vistas of the Rhaetian terraces. The route to Castione thus complements Ambria’s hiking and mountaineering trails with a quieter stretch of landscape.
Ambria, Leonardo and local culture
In Ambria, the multimedia tourist and educational station “Il Viaggio di Leonardo da Vinci ad Ambria” has been installed in the district’s car park. Leonardo da Vinci reached Ambria via Val Brembana on a scientific journey around 1509. In Piateda Centro, the Chiesa del Santissimo Crocifisso houses a large painting by Pietro Ligari depicting Saint Victor.
Industrial archaeology in Piateda
The Venina and Scais dams are considered examples of industrial archaeology in Piateda. The power stations and office buildings of Boffetto and Venina are also regarded as elements of industrial archaeology featuring Liberty-style characteristics. These structures add a factual dimension shaped by energy facilities and labour history to the way Piateda can be viewed.
Library and events
The Biblioteca Comunale di Piateda has a collection of around 7,000 books and DVDs, including books with a local focus. Every year, Proloco Piateda organises around ten regular events for the community and visitors. Both institutions further anchor the town in everyday and community life.
Water activities near Boffetto
Near Boffetto in the municipality of Piateda, a stretch of rapids rated Grade III and IV is considered suitable for rafting and canoeing. Together with the river bends along the route to Castione, this stretch shows that the waterscape around Piateda appeals to very different interests – from quiet observation to sporting activities.
