Gorge, Water and Striking Landscapes

Campodolcino combines an impressive gorge, a historic hiking trail, a museum in the hamlet of Corti, and destinations for cycling and winter sports as well as water-based activities. This gives you a destination whose highlights range from culture and the history of its trails to active pursuits. The Caurga della Rabbiosa is a deep gorge carved by the Rabbiosa mountain stream. A Tibetan bridge is located at the Caurga; it is 70 metres long and 45 metres high.

Routes and Connections

To help you get around between the different settlements, the underground Sky Express funicular connects Campodolcino at 1,082 metres with the hamlet of Motta at 1,721 metres. The ViaSpluga also passes through Campodolcino on its Italian section. The historic hiking trail is approximately 70 kilometres long, connects Thusis in Switzerland with Chiavenna, and follows an ancient route that has been used to cross the Alps since Roman times. The Angeloga Loop passes through Campodolcino and Fraciscio before continuing to Alpe Angeloga.

Culture in the Hamlet of Corti

MUVIS is housed in a historic 16th-century building in the hamlet of Corti in Campodolcino. Its exhibition rooms cover traditional crafts, winter tourism, the typical local home, women's work, historic games and transport along the ViaSpluga. MUVIS also explores the history and culture of a valley crossed by the ViaSpluga. In this way, the focus is not only on the landscape but also on how life and travel in the valley developed.

Active Experiences in the Area

The SplugaPark adventure park is located in the Mottala basin of Campodolcino, between the villages of Fraciscio and Gualdera. It includes Tibetan bridges, suspended trails, zip lines, ropes, nets and tree-to-tree courses. Close to the centre is Acqua Merla, a green park with water features and opportunities to relax outdoors. Acqua Merla features the “Serpentone”, a long water channel with bends, small tunnels and gentle slopes.

Cycling Loop and High Plateau

The “Anello ciclabile Campodolcino–Isola–Pian dei Cavalli–Campodolcino” cycling loop passes through Isola and Starleggia before returning to Campodolcino. Pian dei Cavalli is an extensive high plateau with pastures, limestone rocks, caves and sinkholes. At the same time, Pian dei Cavalli is an archaeological site where traces of Mesolithic hunter groups have been found. The landscape and early human history therefore come together here as a shared theme.

Winter Sports between Campodolcino and Madesimo

The Skiarea Valchiavenna ski area between Madesimo and Campodolcino offers more than 40 kilometres of slopes for alpine skiing. In winter, Campodolcino also offers Nordic walking, ski mountaineering and snowshoeing.
