Induno Olona between Monte Monarco and Valganna

Induno Olona reveals its distinctive character where natural landscapes, sacred architecture, fortress history and brewing culture come together. Key attractions include the deep travertine gorges of the Grotte di Valganna, the 855-metre-high Monte Monarco, the Chiesa di San Pietro in Silvis and the Birrificio Angelo Poretti.

Travertine Gorges and Viewpoints

The Grotte di Valganna in Induno Olona are deep travertine gorges with steep walls, from which the Pisabò waterfall originates. The Monumento Naturale delle Forre della Valganna can be accessed from the village of Grotte di Valganna. The Sentiero Natura del Travertino near the Grotte di Valganna provides insight into the formation of travertine and the plants and animals typical of these habitats.

The summit of Monte Monarco lies at 855 metres above sea level and offers views of the Alps and the Pre-Alps. An excursion trail leads from Castello di Frascarolo to the village of Montallegro. Beyond Montallegro, the route can be continued along a path to Monte Monarco.

Historically Significant Trails

The Sentiero del Giubileo follows the old Valganna route towards Castello di Frascarolo and Induno Olona. One hike followed Sentiero 385D from Velmaio to Induno Olona and included a visit to the Chiesetta di San Pietro in silvis.

Sacred Architecture and Fortress History

The Chiesa di San Pietro in Silvis dates back to the 11th century and contains valuable frescoes. Its furnishings include a 15th-century Crucifixion fresco. Castello di Frascarolo contains frescoes from the school of Bernardino Campi. Castello di Frascarolo remains privately owned by the Medici di Marignano and is not open to visitors. In the Middle Ages, it served as a fortification for controlling the Valganna and Valceresio valleys.

Local Brewing Culture

At Birrificio Angelo Poretti, guided tours lasting approximately one and a half hours are organised on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays; the meeting point is the Negozio del Birrificio. During the visit, there is an opportunity to taste the brewery’s beers at the Negozio del Birrificio.

History and Local Character

The six industrial enterprises powered by the waters of the Olona made Induno Olona a moderately industrialised centre in the 19th century. The railway infrastructure connecting Varese and Luino helped Induno Olona retain its importance in the 20th century. The Festa delle Rose is also part of the town’s history: its roots reach back to 1913, and its first edition took place on the summit of Monarco.
