Colle San Marco between Forests, History and Trails
Colle San Marco is characterized by a distinctive landscape of travertine, dense forests and diverse flora. The massive limestone plateau is the outermost extension of the Montagna dei Fiori. Chestnut, oak, hazel and cherry trees shape the mixed forests; flowers and shrubs complete the vegetation.
Natural Setting and Historic Trails
The Sentiero della Memoria is a historic trail associated with the partisan resistance and begins at the monument on the Colle San Marco plateau. The trail is approximately 11 km long. Information panels are located at the beginning and end; along the route, white-and-red-painted wooden posts indicate the direction and distance. This gives the trail a clearly recognizable historical and practical orientation.
On GABA Stage 7, after a rest at Rifugio Paci, the route leads via Colle San Marco to the Eremo di San Marco. It then follows a historic trail back to Ascoli Piceno. This connection places Colle San Marco within a broader network of hiking routes without reducing the area to just one experience.
Eremo, Grotta and Traces of Hermitage Life
The Eremo di San Marco has a Romanesque façade made of travertine blocks with two rows of bifora windows. It is a natural cave enclosed by a church-like structure with a bell tower and connected to the trail by a stone staircase. The Eremo di San Marco is generally closed to the public.
The Grotta del Beato Corrado became a pilgrimage destination over the centuries and remains in an excellent state of preservation to this day. Carved into the naturally formed rock, the cave is known as a hermit's cell. Over the centuries, the secluded location and dense vegetation made Colle San Marco a preferred destination for monks and hermits seeking meditation and prayer. Only a few visible remains of the Monastero di San Lorenzo survive on Colle San Marco.
Adventure Park for Different Age Groups
The adventure park in Colle San Marco covers 10,000 m² and has six courses, 64 platforms and more than 100 elements. These include Tibetan bridges, rotating walkways and long zip lines. The treetop attractions are suitable for children aged 3 and over, as well as for teenagers and adults with no upper age limit.
Qualified instructors provide the equipment at the adventure park and explain how to use it through a practical demonstration in the briefing area. Thus, in addition to the variety of courses, the procedure before starting is also clearly described.
Rifugio Mario Paci and Regional Cuisine
The Rifugio Escursionistico Mario Paci is located at an altitude of 903 m on the provincial road leading from Colle San Marco to the village of San Giacomo. It can be reached on foot, by bicycle and by car. The rifugio offers traditional cuisine as well as typical dishes from the Marche and Abruzzo regions.
