Rapagnano: Historic Gates, Churches and Culture

Rapagnano is situated on a hill on the left slope of the valley floor of the Tenna River. The town is home to historic gates and churches, a museum, a permanent nativity scene and the Teatro G. Emiliani.

Gates, Walls and Historic Churches

The Porta da Bora, also known as the Porta Marina, was rebuilt in its present form in 1707 and was formerly the only entrance to the castle. The Porta da Sole is Rapagnano’s main gate; it was rebuilt around 1790. There is also a well-preserved tower on the access road to Rapagnano. The two gates are therefore associated with different historical functions and names.

The Fonte della Ripa is considered to be a Roman-era fountain. A surviving section of Rapagnano’s ancient fortification wall has an oval shape. The churches span the period from the 16th to the 19th century: the remains of the rural Chiesa di San Tiburzio date from 1507. The rural Chiesa di Santa Colomba outside Rapagnano was rebuilt in the 18th century. The Parrocchiale di San Giovanni Battista was built in the first quarter of the 19th century over older churches. The churches thus bring together remains, reconstruction and construction over older places of worship.

Art, Nativity Scene and Events

Since 1999, the Museo Parrocchiale has been housed in a room above the sacristy and contains paintings, wooden sculptures and other valuable works of art. This collection is complemented by Rapagnano’s permanent nativity scene, which occupies an area of approximately 70 square metres. Sacred works of art and the large-scale nativity scene thus form two distinct elements of the town’s cultural landscape.

The Teatro G. Emiliani hosts musical and theatrical events, exhibitions and conferences throughout the year. The local festival calendar also includes the traditional patron saint’s festival in honour of San Giovanni Battista. For the patron saint’s celebrations, food stalls offering local specialities were planned in Parco Gentili on three evenings. In addition to the year-round theatre programme, the cultural calendar of Rapagnano therefore also includes a time-limited festival event.

Viale Europa and Getting There

Viale Europa offers another characteristic view of the town. The avenue, approximately 300 metres long, is lined with plane trees and horse chestnuts in double rows. Its approximate length describes a clearly defined section, while the two rows of trees determine the design of the avenue.

When travelling by car, the nearest motorway exits are Porto Sant’Elpidio and Fermo–Porto San Giorgio on the A14. The nearest exits from expressways include Morrovalle–Monte San Giusto and Montecosaro on the SS77. The travel information therefore distinguishes between the connections to the A14 and the exits on the SS77.
