Servigliano: History, Culture and Landscape

Servigliano combines a geometrically well-defined town centre with churches, memorial sites, festival traditions and a landscape of the Tenna, wooded hills, olive groves and vineyards. The town centre contains the two gates and the Collegiata San Marco; outside the municipal area lies Santa Maria del Piano.

Architecture in the Town Centre

The town centre of Servigliano is laid out as a closed quadrilateral measuring 144 × 137 metres. Two gates mark historical construction phases: the Porta Clementina is also known as Porta Marina and was built between September 1774 and September 1775. The Porta Pia is also known as Porta Navarra and was constructed between November 1776 and July 1777. The Collegiata San Marco forms part of this architectural setting. Its construction began in 1774, and the vault was completed in January 1778. The church also houses the relics of San Servigliano and San Gualtiero.

Churches, Monastery and Remembrance

Outside the municipal area lies the church of Santa Maria del Piano, which is also known as Madonna del Piano. It already existed before the foundation of Castel Clementino. The present-day church has the form of a single-nave building and contains seven 18th-century altars. The Franciscan monastery of Servigliano is also connected with the history of the town: the two-storey building has a cloister on the Tenna River; its construction was completed in the first half of the 17th century. The dates range from the completion of the Franciscan monastery in the first half of the 17th century to the construction period of the Collegiata San Marco from 1774 to 1778.

The former Servigliano railway station houses the Museo della Memoria, with a permanent photo exhibition on the history of the camp and a multimedia room. The former Servigliano prisoner-of-war camp is now the Parco della Pace. The equipped green space is used for leisure and sports activities and for large concerts.

Festival Traditions and Local Crafts

Since 1969, the Torneo Cavalleresco di Castel Clementino has brought the historical event of 1450 back to life every August. The parade includes 300 pre-Renaissance costumes created by local district tailoring workshops. Local artisans offer another insight into the area's character: they work with wrought iron and decorate porcelain by hand using the third-firing technique.

Riverside Landscape, Routes and Regional Cuisine

The Tenna River crosses the area of Servigliano. The Ponte sul fiume Tenna was built between 1842 and 1846. The Ippovia del Tenna runs along the river; it is a horse-riding, cycling and hiking route that passes through the municipality of Servigliano. At Campo della Quintana, it has a station where horses can be accommodated in paddocks or stalls with hay and water. Olive oil and wine are produced in the Servigliano area. Serpe di cioccolato, Ciabuscolo and Vincisgrassi are considered typical dishes in the surrounding area.
