Montottone: Terracotta, Churches and Festivals

Montottone lies on a hill at 277 metres above sea level. The municipality is entirely hilly, has a quadrangular shape, stretches from the Tenna River to the Indaco, and is crossed by the Ete Vivo, the Fosso Rivo and the Rio. This landscape gives the town a distinct spatial character and connects the themes of natural surroundings, craftsmanship and local history.

Terracotta as Part of the Town’s Character

Montottone is particularly distinctive for its terracotta. The clay is worked by hand; the objects are made on a potter’s wheel turned by foot, fired in a wood-burning kiln and treated with traditional glazes. This craft-based technique makes the production process an accessible way to discover the local culture.

The pottery tradition continues in the only workshop operated by the Bozzi family. At the Museo della ceramica e civiltà contadina, you can see household objects made from Montottone terracotta as well as tools used by potters. The adjoining workshop offers the opportunity to deepen and practise knowledge and practical techniques in ceramics. The material is also present in the townscape: the house numbers in Montottone are made of ceramic and bear the symbols of the seven contrade.

Churches, Cistern and Historical Traces

Several historic buildings also contribute to the town’s cultural character. The Convento e Chiesa di San Francesco stands on a wooded hill east of Montottone. The Chiesa di San Francesco was enlarged in 1351 and completely restored in 1767. The church of Santa Maria Ausiliatrice houses the painting “Madonna in trono con Bambino e SS. Giovanni Battista, S. Giovanni Evangelista, Maddalena e Caterina (sposalizio mistico)”.

Another testimony to the town’s history is the Cisterna di S. Maria, a public cistern built in Montottone in the 15th century. The remains of the former castle walls have also survived nearby. The cistern and the wall remains add two different historical traces to the town’s history.

Festivals and Local Cuisine

The festival calendar also has its own distinctive highlights. The Palio delle Grazie has been celebrated on 15 June for several years; during the event, the contrade compete for a painted silk banner. The Fiera Tradizionale San Lorenzo takes place every year on 10 August in Contrada Santa Lorenzo. In June, the celebrations in honour of the Madonna delle Grazie are also part of the Sagra degli Gnocchi.
