The Museo Diocesano is located next to Fermo Cathedral in the former premises of the dissolved Confraternita del Suffragio. Its notable pieces include a chasuble in Arab style that had belonged to Saint Thomas Becket, as well as the Messale de Firmonibus, a codex illuminated in 1436 by Giovanni di Ugolino da Milano. The picture gallery extends over two floors: the lower level contains panels from the 15th and 16th centuries, while the upper level features canvas paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Piazza del Popolo is the heart of the city of Fermo. Brick arcades dating from the 16th century frame the square, where the city’s oldest public buildings are located. The Biblioteca Civica Romolo Spezioli has a history spanning three centuries and preserves 3,000 manuscripts, 127 codices and 300,000 documents. Palazzo Paccaroni houses the Museo Polare “Silvio Zavatti” and the Museo di Scienze Naturali “Tommaso Salvadori”.

The churches, too, take visitors through different eras and art forms. Chiesa di San Filippo Neri (Chiesa del Santo Spirito) was built from 1594 onwards and consecrated in 1607. Chiesa di San Francesco in Fermo is a 15th-century Gothic church and houses a funerary monument for Euffreducci created by Andrea Sansovino in 1527. The fresco decoration in the chapel to the right of the main chapel is attributed to Giuliano; it includes an Annunciation, a Coronation of the Virgin and other fragments. The Oratorio di Santa Monica is entirely decorated with 15th-century frescoes depicting stories of Saint John the Baptist and Saint John the Evangelist.

The Teatro romano of Fermo preserves the remains of a Roman theatre that could accommodate up to 2,000 spectators. The archaeological site of Torre di Palme dates back to a Picenian necropolis dated to the 6th century BC. Its excavations have yielded valuable finds relating to the settlement and customs of this population. Contemporary culture is represented by Terminal Mario Dondero: the cultural space is located in a modern arrival and departure station and hosts exhibitions and events. The Gabinetto delle stampe e dei disegni contains around 6,500 prints and 4,500 drawings.

Open-Air Art, Green Spaces and Coast

FUM is an open-air museum of urban art featuring a route through the city’s murals, as well as workshops and labs in a multidisciplinary space.
