Camerino: Culture, Landscapes and Local Traditions

Camerino can be explored through its distinctive buildings, rolling landscapes and local specialities. The Palazzo Ducale, Rocca Varano, Teatro Filippo Marchetti, Oasi di San Vito-Arcofiato and Torrone di Camerino provide concrete points of interest for a range of interests. Palaces, Fortress and Theatre

The Palazzo Ducale was formed from three buildings dating from the 13th to the 15th century and expanded by Giulio Cesare da Varano. It features a four-sided courtyard and a panoramic balcony overlooking the Sibillini Mountains. This building brings together architectural history and views of the Sibillini Mountains.

Rocca Varano was built at the beginning of the 12th century on a steep rocky spur between the valleys of the Chienti and the San Luca stream. The Teatro Filippo Marchetti is currently unusable because of the 2016 earthquake and offers a virtual tour. Camerino therefore encompasses historic buildings as well as a digital way to explore a theatre that is currently unusable.

Hills, Forests and Plant Life

The area around Camerino is predominantly hilly. It includes cultivated fields, forests, centuries-old oaks and valleys, as well as heights crowned with towers and castles. The landscape thus combines natural areas with visible historical influences.

The Oasi di San Vito-Arcofiato is a 526-hectare protected area along the Camerino-Sfercia provincial road and an example of the species-rich landscape of the upper hills of the Marche region.

The “Carmela Cortini” Botanical Garden of the University of Camerino was founded in 1828 by Prof. Vincenzo Ottaviani and established as a space for growing medicinal plants. The history of plant cultivation thus adds its own historical dimension to the nature-related themes around Camerino.

Traditions and Flavours

Torrone di Camerino is a De.Co. speciality with more than a century of tradition in confectionery making. At “Alla scoperta del Torrone Camerinese”, you can taste the soft centre of this local tradition. Camerino therefore also appeals to visitors who want to discover the region’s history through a specific product.

The Corsa alla Spada e Palio is a historical re-enactment that links the veneration of Camerino’s patron saint, San Venanzio, with the rule of Giulio Cesare Da Varano. It takes place over ten days. The main days are 17 May, the eve of San Venanzio, and the Sunday after 18 May. For a trip focused on this aspect of culture, this timetable is just as useful for orientation as the historical theme.

Routes Offering Different Perspectives

Camerino also offers specific routes for active days. The Ciclovia del Chienti e del Potenza is a cycling route approximately 340 km long that crosses two provinces and 16 municipalities, including Camerino. The “Alla scoperta della Fonte di Figareto” route leads from the Chiesa di Palente to the Figareto ravine, continues to the Figareto spring and ends in Selvazzano. Along the way, you encounter both an extensive cycling route and a series of specific stops.
