Torrone is located in the Cingoli area.
Landscape in the Municipality of Cingoli
In the Municipality of Cingoli, Lago di Castreccioni is the largest artificial basin in the Marche region. In the area surrounding the lake, the Macchia del Montenero forms a protected area of major botanical significance. For your travel planning, Lago di Castreccioni and the Macchia del Montenero can be considered as two separate nature-related topics, without confusing their respective significance.
Cingoli between Panoramic Views and a Museum
Cingoli is situated in a scenic position above the upper Musone Valley and is therefore known as the “Balcone delle Marche”. Its position above the valley explains the regional character of this name and makes Cingoli a clear reference point when you want to understand the landscape and topography of the Marche region.
The Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Cingoli is housed in the Palazzo Comunale and is located on Cingoli’s central main square. The museum has an accessible route without obstacles, as well as tactile 3D reproductions and labels in Braille. This allows you to consider the cultural part of your planning from the perspective of different needs as well.
Roman Traces in Torrone
In the Cingoli area, Torrone is one of the sites of Roman villae-fattorie, meaning agricultural estates. When the Romans arrived, Torrone was one of the small, scattered hilltop settlements in the middle Musone Valley. Both references place the site within a rural history that extends beyond individual buildings.
The Chiesa di San Vitale
The Chiesa di San Vitale has a rectangular floor plan with a single nave. It is 6.30 metres wide and 12 metres long. Above the southern main entrance is a bifora, dating approximately to the 13th century, with reveals bevelled on both sides. It is precisely the combination of clear proportions and a distinctive architectural feature that makes the church worthwhile for visitors interested in architectural history.
The Chiesa di San Vitale in Torrone can probably be identified with a room of uncertain original purpose that belonged to the ancient Castello di San Vitale. After the patronage of San Vitale was transferred from the nearby Pieve, this room was converted into a church. In the first decades of the 13th century, the Castello di San Vitale became embroiled in conflicts between the municipalities of Cingoli and Osimo and was destroyed by the people of Cingoli before 1227. Some historians also identify the present-day Chiesa di San Vitale with the church formerly dedicated to Saint Clement, which belonged to the Castello di San Vitale.
The left exterior wall of the Chiesa di San Vitale contains six niches framed with simple mouldings composed of several sections. Each niche contains a relief of a saint. Because of their small size and simple execution, these six reliefs of saints on the left exterior wall of the Chiesa di San Vitale are known as “mammocci”.
