Museums with Unusual Collections

The Museo internazionale del presepio di Morrovalle is housed in the underground rooms of the former 18th-century monastery of the Augustinian Fathers. Around 800 Nativity scenes from around the world are made from different materials and created using a variety of techniques. In the final room, the museum presents the “Storia della Salvezza” through dioramas depicting biblical and Gospel scenes.

The Museo civico pinacoteca “Palazzo Lazzarini” is located in a 13th-century building with a medieval ground plan and an elaborately crafted stone portal. Its core collection consists of paintings from churches in the surrounding area, particularly from the Chiesa di Sant’Agostino. It also includes panel paintings and canvases from the 16th to the 18th century.

Gates, Churches and Palazzi

The Chiesa di San Bartolomeo has an unplastered brick façade arranged across two superimposed levels. Behind it is a single-nave interior with side chapels, preserving valuable 18th-century features. Porta Alvaro dates from the 14th century and is the main entrance to Morrovalle’s historic centre. The inscription “Civitas Eucharestiae” appears on the gate, commemorating the Eucharistic Miracle of 1560 at the Franciscan monastery of Morrovalle.

The Palazzo del Podestà also dates from the 14th century. Its surviving features include Ghibelline crenellations and cross vaults in rooms below street level. The Palazzo del Comune has a long portico with round arches resting on square columns. Next to it stands the Torre civica, which dates from the 14th century, is square in plan and has Ghibelline crenellations.

Park, Station and Spiritual History

Following its restoration by the municipal administration, the church of the former Franciscan monastery was converted into an auditorium for a wide range of cultural activities.

The Santuario della Madonna dell’Acqua Santa di Morrovalle originally developed from a small temple dedicated to the Madonna della Neve. The Convento dei Padri Passionisti included a building that accommodated pilgrims from more distant places. Francesco Possenti, later known as Saint Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows, came to this convent for his novitiate.
