Cessapalombo: Nature, Hiking Trails and Cultural Heritage

Natural surroundings between forests, mountains and olive groves

Cessapalombo is located in Parco Nazionale dei Monti Sibillini. The area is predominantly forested and mountainous; the hilly areas include cultivated land and olive groves. Forest and mountain landscapes meet cultivated areas here, giving the place a distinct landscape character. If you would like to combine nature with a rural cultural landscape, Cessapalombo offers a variety of ways to do so.

Monastic history and fortress architecture

The Abbazia San Salvatore di Rio Sacro is also known as Santa Maria in Insula. It was founded in 1009 by San Romualdo on the site of a Roman villa that had been converted into a hermitage. It soon developed into an important centre of Camaldolese monastic life. In the crypt, nine columns and a pier support the ribbed vaults. The architectural design makes this area particularly interesting if you would like to view medieval ecclesiastical architecture not only through its history but also through its construction.

The Castello di Montalto was founded in the 9th century as an important Varano fortress and was surrounded by three rings of walls. The Church of San Benedetto, decorated with 16th-century frescoes, is located inside the Castello di Montalto. The fortress and church interior therefore combine military history and sacred art at this historic site.

Butterflies and environmental education

Il Giardino delle Farfalle is an environmental education centre operated by Parco dei Sibillini. The centre includes classrooms, a greenhouse for observing the life cycle of butterflies and moths, and a multimedia museum. It also features a 12,000 m² garden with numerous areas and habitats and abundant vegetation consisting of wild-growing, medicinal and aromatic plants. There, you can learn about local butterflies and moths. The garden thus combines nature observation, environmental education and botanical diversity.

Circular trails with different starting points

The Sentiero delle Carbonaie is an educational circular trail. It begins in Villa di Montalto, passes through forests and pastures, and returns to the village. The Sentiero Natura n. 16 is also a circular trail in Parco Nazionale dei Monti Sibillini. Its starting point is in Tribbio; the route runs through hilly and mountainous landscapes and passes through dense stands of downy oaks, hornbeams and manna ashes. The Sentiero Grotte dei Frati also begins in Villa di Montalto, heading towards Monastero, and leads to the Grotta dei Frati and the Gole del Fiastrone. For planning purposes, the described trails therefore differ in their starting points, landscapes and destination areas.

The charcoal-making tradition and church art in Villa di Montalto

The tradition of charcoal making continues in Cessapalombo. A special truncated-cone-shaped charcoal kiln structure called “la ’ncotta” is used for this purpose. In the hamlet of Villa di Montalto, the Santissima Annunziata is also located there, a small building with simple, regular forms that probably dates from the late 14th century. Its presbytery houses the painting “Mater Misericordiae con cavalieri”, dated 1468 and attributed to Giovanni Angelo d’Antonio da Bologna. Visits are possible by prior reservation or during the liturgical celebrations at 11:30 a.m. on every Sunday of the month.
