Gualdo: Medieval Walls, Sibillini Views and Trails

Gualdo is a medieval village with a historic townscape: a horseshoe-shaped ring of walls with five towers surrounds the village, and the Castello di Gualdo was a fortress belonging to the Brunforte family. The five towers give the village a clearly recognizable historical structure.

Medieval Townscape and Historical Traces

One of the notable historic buildings is the Mulino Brunforte. It was built in the 13th century as a fortified building on the left bank of the Tennacola stream. The Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie probably dates from the 12th century and preserves a 15th-century fresco of the Madonna. The Franciscan monastery adjoining the church was founded in the 16th century and preserves the original cloister and the original church. It is permanently closed and can only be viewed from the outside.

The Biblioteca Archivio Romolo Murri contains more than 5,000 volumes. The Romolo Murri Archive contains around 12,000 documents, all of which are classified as being of considerable historical interest. Access to the Centro Studi Romolo Murri is possible by prior appointment.

Panoramas over Hills and Mountains

The Terrazza sui Sibillini offers panoramic views of the Monti Sibillini range and the cultivated hills. At the Belvedere Monti Azzurri, there is a paved terrace with street furniture and a telescope. It can be used to view the hills and the Monti Azzurri. The medieval village of Gualdo also offers views extending from the Monti Sibillini to Monte Conero.

Compare Routes by Distance and Elevation Gain

The three routes differ in distance and elevation gain: the Via delle Fonti is a 3-kilometer circular route with 120 meters of elevation gain. The Itinerario del Mulino Brunforte circular route is 9 kilometers long and has 310 meters of elevation gain. The Panoramica verso il fiume is 12 kilometers long, also has 310 meters of elevation gain, and partly runs through woodland. For an outing with limited time, the short loop therefore provides an alternative to the two longer routes.
